The junior Basketball Bundesliga (NBBL) is the highest German basketball league for players aged under 19 years. It was founded in 2006 as a joint project of the Basketball Bundesliga , the 2nd Basketball Bundesliga and the DBB . According to its own statement, the main focus of this league is to give national youth basketball a professional, nationwide structure.

history

The NBBL was founded in the 2006/07 season as a joint project of the Basketball Bundesliga , the 2nd Basketball Bundesliga and the DBB . For the first season, a league committee under DBB Vice President Ingo Rolf Weiss selected 32 teams. A total of 37 team reports had been received by the March 2006 reporting date. Since the end of 2006, the league has been run by the “ non-profit society for the promotion of young German basketball ”.

Since 2007/08 , not all teams take part in the playoffs , but only the first four teams of the respective divisions. The last four teams play in the playdowns for relegation. For the 2009/2010 season, following the positive experience with the NBBL, the youth basketball league (JBBL, male U16) and the female youth basketball league (WNBL, female U17) were introduced based on its model. In 2011 a guideline for promoting young talent was developed, according to which participation in the NBBL is a mandatory basic requirement for a BBL license. The mode was adapted for the first time for the 2019/20 season . At the same time, it was the first season since the league was founded in which no German champions could be determined as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic in Germany .

organization

Principles

In order to guarantee the goal of promoting young people, the teams can form syndicates and use players from third clubs. In the first year it became apparent that this succeeds differently in the individual regional groups. Since the NBBL is only additive, the players also take part in normal league operations depending on their level of performance. The range here extends from youth leagues to isolated first division appearances. In order to avoid school disadvantages for the players and clashes with other leagues, the NBBL games should generally take place on Sundays between 1:00 p.m. and 3:00 p.m.

Bodies

Uwe Albersmeyer is the managing director of the operating company. A league committee is available to advise the managing director. He is primarily concerned with the sporting development and further development. The partners of the joint project send members to the league committee. There are three representatives of the German Basketball Federation, one representative of the Basketball Bundesliga and one representative of the Second Bundesliga. Another place is reserved for an “ outstanding personality in German basketball ”. This has been Henning Harnisch since the league was founded . The DBB Vice President for Youth takes over the management of the committee.

Game operation

Game mode

From 2007 to 2019

Nominally, a total of 32 teams played in four geographically separated groups, the main rounds. The assignment to the divisions could change from season to season in order to minimize travel distances. Membership in regional associations and the borders of the federal states were not taken into account. All teams that had reached the play-offs in the preseason and did not lose the second round of playdowns were eligible to participate for one season . In order to fill up the remaining group places, a qualification was played before each NBBL season. There was no sporting descent in the narrower sense, as the NBBL is not subordinate to a league. Because the Bundesliga basketball teams were forced to provide an NBBL team due to the youth promotion guidelines, the main rounds could be increased to nine teams each through a wildcard rule. Last season, 35 teams played in this mode in the main rounds.

During the main round, all teams in a main round competed against each other in home and away matches. The four best-placed teams in each group qualified for the playoffs and automatically for the following NBBL season. The teams that were in places 5 to 8 after the end of the main round played in the playdowns . If 9 instead of 8 teams played in a division due to a wildcard , the last division also immediately lost the right to participate in the following season.

The four best teams in each division took part in the playoffs. The first two rounds (eighth and quarter finals) were played in the best of three mode. The team with the better place in the table in the main round has home rights in games 1 and 3. The main rounds south and middle played the playoffs south and the main rounds north and west the playoffs north. The mode ensured that the master of one division did not meet the runner-up in his own division or the master of the other division in the second round. From the semi-finals onwards, the two best teams from the north and the south competed against each other in a Top4 tournament to determine the champion. There, the final teams were determined in two semi-final games, which then played in a final game for the German championship.

The teams in the lower half of the table took part in the playdowns. All rounds were held in the best of three mode. The winners of the first playdown round qualified for the following season, while the losers had to compete again in a second round. The winners of the second round also qualified for the following season, while the four losers had to compete in the qualification for the next season.

The game mode was unchanged (except for the number of participating teams) since the 2007/08 season . Only in the first season of 2006/07 was a larger play-off round, in which all teams participated, instead of the playdowns, played in a round trip.

Since 2019

For the 2019/20 season , the NBBL's game mode was fundamentally reformed for the first time. Instead of four main rounds with equal rights, there are now two main round groups A (in the divisions “North” and “South”) with eight teams each and four main round groups B (in the divisions “North-West”, “North-East”, “South-West” "&" Süd-Ost ") with six teams each. 40 teams are now constantly playing in the NBBL, wildcards should no longer exist. The composition of the groups in the first season after the reform is based on the performance of the teams in the 2018/19 season : The play-off participants of this season form main round A, while the teams that are sporting for the NBBL (either over a qualification tournament or via the "non-relegation" in the preseason), compete in main round B.

In the main round A, a main round in the league system is played first. The six best-placed teams in each group then play play-offs while the season is over for the bottom and bottom of the group. These four teams compete in main round B in the following season.

In the main round B, a main round is also played first. The two best-placed teams in each group compete against each other in a promotion round (divided into "North" and "South"). The four teams in first and second place in the promotion rounds compete in the play-offs and have earned the right to participate in main round A for the following season. The four other teams of the promotion round have secured a starting place in the main round B. The 16 other teams in main round B must compete against each other in a relegation round. For the relegation round, the teams are divided into two groups "North" and "South", in which the teams compete again in the "everyone against everyone" mode. The best six teams in each group secure the right to participate in main round B in the following season, while the two worst-placed teams in each group have to qualify for the NBBL again in a qualifying tournament in the following season

As in the old alignment mode, the play-offs will be played in the best of three mode. The four best teams then play in the Top4 tournament for the German championship.

NBBL ALLSTAR Game

In addition to the normal league operations, an NBBL ALLSTAR game is also held. While the first edition of the game in 2007 featured an NBBL selection against the German U20 national basketball team, since then a north against a south selection. The game has been part of the opening act for the BBL All-Star Games since 2008 . The game's MVP will then be chosen. So far, the southern selection has won 9 out of 12 matches. In 2020 there was no ALLSTAR game because the basketball Bundesliga decided not to host their game.

Well-known former players of the NBBL

reception

The creation of the NBBL as a professional youth organization in German basketball is perceived extremely positively by commentators. Basketball coach and television commentator Stefan Koch noticed significant increases in the youth sector in 2018, which he attributed to the NBBL. National coach Henrik Rödl , who worked for the NBBL for several years as a coach, also noted the progress made by the youth coaches. In particular, the significantly higher degree of professionalization compared to previous structures has improved the development opportunities of young players.
