The female youth basketball league ( WNBL ) is the highest German basketball league for women under the age of 18 (U18) and the German youth championship in this age group. As a training league oriented towards competitive sports, the WNBL serves to promote young talent and is intended to enable the players to have additional match practice at a high level against youngsters of about the same strength. It is a project of the German Basketball Federation (DBB). The WNBL enables an early concentration of performance and the accumulation of talents in order to increase the range of high-performance young players for the youth national teams, regional and national leagues.

history

The WNBL started the first season of the 2009/2010 season together with the JBBL.

Principles

In order to guarantee the goal of promoting young people, the teams can form syndicates and use players from third clubs. The NBBL has shown that this succeeds differently in the individual regional groups. Since the WNBL, like the NBBL and JBBL, is only additive, the players also take part in normal league operations depending on their level of performance.

Game operation

The preliminary round is played by 24 teams, which are divided into four groups according to geographical criteria. After a round-trip round, the four best-placed teams will form a playoff tree with the other North or South relay. The two semi-finalists of the respective tree meet in Final 4 and then play against the other teams for third place or for the championship title. The two last-placed teams now have to play against each other in the play-downs, again in a north and south relay. The two teams placed first will be able to stay up, while the other two teams in the relegation North or South have to fight with four promoted teams for two WNBL tickets each.
