The SC Rist Wedel is a German basketball club.
history
The SC Rist Wedel was founded on May 28, 1968 in Wedel by sports teachers from the local Johann-Rist-Gymnasium , the first club chairman was Ewald Schauer . The home of the "Rister" is the Halle am Steinberg (Steinberghalle).
founding
A volleyball division was added to the basketball division in 1972 , but it no longer exists today. The SC Rist is known nationwide for its basketball teams. The youth teams won several German championships in basketball and numerous Hamburg championships .
History men's team
1970s
In 1973, the Wedel men's team won the cup competition of the Hamburg Basketball Association for the first time and took part in the DBB Cup.
1980s
In 1982 the team rose after several unsuccessful attempts from the upper to the regional league and in the first season of 1982/83 was equal on points runner-up behind the BC Johanneum.
1985 succeeded under the coaching team Klaus Smollich and Bernd Karow promotion to the 2nd Bundesliga. The audience interest in the home games has meanwhile grown strongly, the encounters in the Steinberghalle are turning into extremely atmospheric events.
In the 1986/87 season, the SC Rist moved into the promotion round to the first division. In 1988, the team was runner-up under coach Frank Hoffmann, but for financial reasons they decided not to move up to the 1st Bundesliga. In 1988 they reached the semi-finals in the DBB Cup as a second division team, after the first division clubs TV Langen and SpVgg Ludwigsburg am Steinberg had previously been defeated. In the round of the last four, the team then lost to Steiner Bayreuth . The top performers at this time were Christian Pauk, the brothers Bernd and Jens Röder, Dirk Rehder, Ingo Knillmann and Winfried Rathje.
1990s
In 1991 the team was again runner-up in the 2nd Bundesliga. In 1992 they were relegated to the Regionalliga and returned in 1994 under coach Thorsten Döding as the undefeated champion of the Regionalliga Nord in the second highest division. The Latvian national player Dzintars Jaunzems, who was signed in 1993, made a significant contribution to the promotion and was also a pillar of the team in the following years in the 2nd Bundesliga.
In the 1997/98 season, the relegation round was reached under coach Ivan Vojtko , in which, in addition to the better-placed teams in the second division, the first division side from the lower half of the table took part. In the 1999/2000 season Wedel moved under coach Thorsten Meyer in the promotion round to the 1st Bundesliga.
2000s
The men's team of SC Rist remained in the 2nd Bundesliga without interruption until 2002 (since 1994), then the team was withdrawn to the Regionalliga Nord for financial reasons. Manager Jörg Gehrke and the US coach John Sable started the new beginning, which however had to be mastered without the greatest talents Alexander Seggelke , Martin Duggen and Markus Holle, as the three young players left Wedel and moved to other clubs within the 2nd Bundesliga .
In the 2003/04 season, the team under coach Emir Ibrahimbegović botched the start thoroughly and was after seven games with 4:10 points in tenth place in the table. In November 2003 Ibrahimbegović and the club separated, after a temporary solution Pat Elzie was won as a coach for the second half of the season, and the US American Michael Claxton was signed as a player. Rist Wedel managed the turnaround under Elzies leadership and secured the league with a winning streak, Claxton was significantly involved in remaining in the first regional league with a points average of 27.
Two returnees shaped the team in the middle of the decade: Ingo Freyer became coach in Wedel after the end of his playing career, playmaker Cecil Egwuatu dominated the regional league and scored 39.4 points per game for SC Rist in the 2006/07 season. Freyer established the team in the regional league top, in 2007 he went to Phoenix Hagen , the previous Wedel women coach Özhan Gürel replaced him and continued the development, which in 2009 won the championship in the first Regionalliga Nord and the promotion to the 2. Bundesliga ProB culminated.
2010s
In the 2011/12 season the team reached the playoffs in the ProB for the first time and was eliminated in the round of 16 against Nördlingen. In the next few years it always went a step further. In 2012/13 (under coach Sebastian Gleim, who replaced Gürel shortly before the start of the season) they advanced to the quarter-finals (elimination against Weißenhorn), in 2013/14 they were eliminated in the semifinals against Oldenburg. After the season, Gleim moved to the youth department of the Bundesliga club Skyliners Frankfurt , Michael Claxton became the new coach ten years after his time as a player in Wedel. The American led the team to the runner-up in the ProB in the spring of 2015, the enthusiasm of the audience tied to the heyday of the mid / late 1980s and early 1990s. The club did not exercise the right to promotion to the 2nd Bundesliga ProA . The outstanding player of the runner-up team in 2014/15 was the American Diante Watkins , who was named "Player of the Year" in the ProB. A cycle that began in 2011/12 with the first playoff participation ended with silver in spring 2015.
After the 2015/16 season, in which the class remained in the relegation round, Claxton gave the coaching post to the Spaniard Félix Bañobre. In 2016/17 they made the leap into the championship round in the final sprint, where they failed against the first opponent (and later title winner) Weißenhorn. In the 2018/19 season, in which the team budget was around 160,000 euros, Bañobre led SC Rist to third place in the ProB points round. Bañobre's term of office ended afterwards, the new coach was 31-year-old Benka Barloschky , who, in addition to his work in Wedel, also remained assistant coach at the cooperation partner Hamburg Towers.
Cooperation with the Hamburg Towers
In 2014, Rist Wedel agreed on a cooperation with Hamburg Towers , which entered the ProA competition. In keeping with its long history as a talent training association, Wedel took on the role of a youth development team. Young players were given the opportunity to play with “double licenses” for Wedel and for the Towers. The cooperation also applies to training work. The club had been a cooperation partner of Piraten Hamburg, the "forerunner" of the Towers, in the youth basketball league and junior basketball league since 2009 .

History ladies team
The 1st women of SC Rist renounced promotion to the 2nd Bundesliga in 1984 as champions of the Regionalliga Nord, as well as runners-up in 1992. In 1995, the move to the 2nd Bundesliga was realized under the coaches Manfred Schuncke and Christoph Schmalisch. A year later, the relegation had to be accepted, but it succeeded in 1997 under coach Marc Köpp the direct rise, which even led the team in the spring of 2000 in the 1st Bundesliga. The promotion to the top German league was clear in early March 2000 after a 62:51 away win in Bensberg, the promotion season ended with a record of 18 wins and two defeats. In the first season of 2000/01, the team was vice-cup winner and reached the playoff quarter-finals for the German championship. In the following two seasons, the team took part in the European Cup (2001/02: Ronchetti Cup, 2002/03: FIBA Europe Cup). In the 2002/03 season they came back to the playoff quarter-finals and the semi-finals in the DBBL Cup. In 2004 he was relegated to the 2nd Bundesliga.
Under the new leadership of Özhan Gürel, the direct rise in the 2004/05 season narrowly failed (defeat in the playoff final). In 2007 Gürel switched to the men's team's position as coach, Marc Köpp became coach again, and the 2007/2008 season ended in the playoff semifinals of the 2nd Bundesliga. In the 2008/09 season, Köpp led the team to the semi-finals again and then retired from the coaching post.
Between 2009 and 2012, Alexander May managed the fate of the Wedeler women as a trainer, the team was named RIST SCALA Ladybaskets due to a cooperation with SC Alstertal-Langenhorn. In 2012 the team was withdrawn from the 2nd Bundesliga to the second regional league, where they won the championship without defeat in the 2012/13 season under the direction of coach Gundula Laabs and were promoted to the first regional league. The top performers of the championship team included the Bundesliga experienced returnees Katharina Kühn and Dana Penno. Success also continued in the first regional league, where the championship was won in the 2013/14 season, but promotion to the second division was not made.
In the 2015/16 season, the Wedel women had to accept relegation from the first to the second regional league. In 2017/18 they finished fourth in the 2nd Regional League and rose as a successor to the 1st Regional League, where they came third in 2018/19. In addition, the Hamburg Cup competition was won in the same season. In May 2019, the previous co-trainer Oliver Böttcher was introduced as the new head coach and thus as the successor to Manfred Schuncke.
