Stephan Völkel (born April 13, 1971 in Hagen , Westphalia ) is a German basketball trainer and official.

After Völkel initially worked as a full-time youth coach at the traditional Bundesliga club Brandt Hagen , he was head coach at the second division SC Rist Wedel for one season before he worked for the West German Basketball Association (WBV). From 2006 he was assistant coach to Douglas Spradley for various first and second division teams with a one-year break at the Oettinger Rockets from Gotha.

Career

Born in Hagen, the seat of the German Basketball Federation , Völkel was infected with the basketball virus like many other young people there. Since it was not enough for a career as a player, he became a coach at an early age and was then junior coordinator at the first division club and Bundesliga founding member Brandt Hagen since 1998. During these years he was German youth champion with various youth teams and several times West German national champion. After two years, he was offered the position of head coach of the second division club “SC Rist” from Wedel near Hamburg for the 2000/01 season . The SC Rist is known as a training association for young talents and has already been awarded the "Green Ribbon" several times for exemplary talent promotion. After just one season, Völkel received the offer to take over the second division Paderborn Baskets. After he filed for bankruptcy at short notice, he worked again in his hometown, this time for the regional association WBV , for which he trained various teams in the youth field and carried out trainer training. In 2005 he took over the BBV Hagen as the responsible coach, the successor club to the first division club Brandt, which went bankrupt at the end of 2003.

A year later in 2006, the first division promoted Paderborn Baskets Völkel offered the position as an assistant coach. In East Westphalia he worked as an assistant to Douglas Spradley and was also supposed to promote the promotion of young talent in the club. After the club's greatest success with moving into the play-offs in 2008/09 for the German championship, Spradley moved from the financially troubled club to league rivals Eisbären Bremerhaven and took his assistant Völkel with him. Here he also works on the coaching staff with Hamed Attarbashi, who was previously the youth coordinator in Paderborn and who moved to Bremerhaven in 2007. Völkel currently has a contract until the end of the 2012/13 season .

After coach Spradley's dismissal in Bremerhaven, youth coordinator Attarbashi became the assistant to the new head coach Calvin Oldham and Völkel took a position as assistant to the newcomer Chris Ensminger at the Oettinger Rockets from Gotha in the ProA second division . Völkel had already worked with Ensminger when he was still a player in Paderborn in the 2008/09 season. After one season he switched to the league competitor and first division relegated s.Oliver Baskets from Würzburg , for whom he again worked as an assistant to Douglas Spradley, who had started a new head coach after a one-year break at the Würzburg team. After Douglas Spradley's dismissal in December 2016, Völkel stayed in Würzburg as assistant to the new coach Dirk Bauermann before leaving the club after the end of the 2016/17 season.

In July 2017, he moved within the Bundesliga to the MHP Riesen Ludwigsburg , where he became John Patrick's assistant coach . The separation took place at the beginning of February 2018. Shortly thereafter, Völkel became a sports advisor for the Cuxhaven Baskets ( 2nd Bundesliga ProB ). At the beginning of March 2018 he took over the post of head coach in Cuxhaven and held it until the end of the 2017/18 season.

In June 2018 he was introduced as head coach of the Luxembourg first division club Musel Pikes, and remained in office until the end of the 2018/19 season. In August 2019 he took up the position of managing director of the second division Eisbären Bremerhaven, but resigned from this position at the beginning of September 2019 for personal reasons. At the end of December 2019 he became head coach at the White Wings Hanau (2nd Bundesliga ProB). The 2019/20 season ended prematurely due to the spread of the SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus , and his term of office in Hanau came to an end. Völkel had led Hanau to third place in the final table. In June 2020 he was introduced as the new head coach and sporting director of the Iserlohn Kangaroos (also 2nd Bundesliga ProB).
