The Iserlohn Kangaroos are a German basketball club from Iserlohn in the Sauerland , which has been playing in the 2nd Bundesliga ProB since the 2014/15 season .

The games will be played in Iserlohn's Matthias-Grothe-Halle am Hemberg. The team's mascot is the kangaroo "Jumpy". The name sponsor has changed several times in recent years. For many years the team was called TuS Poco Iserlohn , in the 2005/06 season it was called C »Press Iserlohn . From the 2007/2008 season up to and including 2014/2015 the name was NOMA Iserlohn Kangaroos .

history

When ski club Iserlohn in 1955 a basketball department set up, only twelve years later TuS Iserlohn passed. As a basketball club, they joined the West German Basketball Association on August 1, 1958 . In 1972 the basketball department of TuS rose to the upper league for the first time, the third highest division. As a result, the basket hunters usually commuted between the national and upper leagues. This only changed with the appearance of Paris Konstantinidis . The Greek started as a sponsor with the Iserlohn team and after years of staying in the upper league, in 1990 they were promoted to the 1st regional league. On March 28, 1992 with the Lithuanian bronze medal winner of the 1992 Olympic Games Gintaras Krapikas in the foreign position, the Kangaroos under coach Ronald Feisel with the cast Ingo Siebert, Oliver Kirchner, Michael Kwast, Stefan Höler , Elmar Grof , Karsten-Thilo Raab, Uwe Radegast, Henning Funke, Thomas Deneke, Volker Arnts and Frank Schachtsiek promoted promotion to the 2nd Bundesliga as regional league champions, after the goal was narrowly missed in 1991 due to an insufficient point in a direct duel with DJK Adler Frintrop .

In the following year, however, the youth teams in particular attracted attention. The C-youth was West German champion and German runner-up; the D-Jugend also West German champions. In 1994 the TuS basketball players had to relegate to the 1st regional league, and in this year they also became an independent department of the TuS after they had previously belonged to the gymnastics department. In 2002 the first team found their way back to the 2nd Bundesliga. In the 2005/2006 season the TuS was under the new name C >> Press Iserlohn on a relegation zone until the end. After two coach changes, veteran Paris Konstantinidis was back on the sidelines. With an away win in the last game of the season, the Kangaroos improved from last to penultimate place in the table. It was officially linked to relegation, but since the basketball Bundesliga was topped up, the Kangaroos received a license after a painstaking search for sponsors, and games in the second Bundesliga could continue.

After a successful 2006/2007 season, which ended in eleventh place in the 2nd Bundesliga North, the team got its current name and started in the newly formed ProB with the name NOMA Iserlohn Kangaroos. In the 2007/2008 season, however, the team of coach Paris Konstantinidis could only win seven games, so that the Kangaroos were relegated to the regional league after six years in the 2nd basketball division . The new coach was the Serbian Dragan Torbica , who was named coach of the year in the first Serbian league in 2006. With a very young squad, the Kangaroos just missed promotion to the 2nd Bundesliga in 2008/2009 and finished third. Coach Torbica left and switched to the GiroLive Ballers in Osnabrück. The Americans Paul Peterson and Fletcher Walters also left the club. The club's new coach was Ljubisa Anicic. He was in office until November 2009 and was replaced by Andreas Klippert after his dismissal, who resigned in mid-January 2010. Until the end of the 2009/10 season, the team was trained by sporting director Michael Dahmen.

Matthias Grothe was hired as a new coach for the 2010/11 season . In the 2013/14 season, the team won the championship in the first Regionalliga West and thus promoted to the 2nd Bundesliga ProB . There they reached the play-offs as a new league player in 2014/15 and only had to admit defeat to SC Rist Wedel in the semi-finals . In February 2017, Grothe announced his departure at the end of the 2016/17 season. With Dragan Torbica, his assistant was promoted to head coach for the 2017/18 season. The Serb took on a second term after he had already been the main coach at the Iserlohn team in the 2008/09 season.

In the 2017/18 season, the Iserlohners reached the semi-finals of the championship round under Torbica's leadership and were eliminated there against Rostock. In February 2018, the sports committee of the city of Iserlohn decided to rename the team's home ground - the hall on Hemberg, which was completed in 2011 - in memory of the former player and coach who died on October 31, 2017, as Matthias-Grothe-Halle.

Iserlohn Kangaroos GmbH was founded on June 5, 2018 by eleven shareholders (Kai Beutler, Axel Pütter, Andreas Knode, Thomas Keienburg, Ralf Feser, Rainer Ambrosy, Jochen Schäfer, Michael Dahmen, Jochen Kirchhoff, Heinz-Peter Heinrichs, Klaus Holke) , the license for the men's team was transferred from TuS Iserlohn to the new operating company. In addition, the GmbH and the association signed a cooperation agreement. Dahmen took over the office of managing director of the GmbH.

At the beginning of January 2019, Torbica was relieved of his office, and his previous assistant Milos Stankovic became his successor as coach of the men's team. After the team under Stankovic recorded seven wins and 15 defeats in the 2019/20 season, Iserlohn used a contractual clause at the end of March 2020 to end the cooperation. He was succeeded by Stephan Völkel , who, in addition to the duties of head coach, also took on the position of sports director.

Known players

The Kangaroos are particularly proud of Matthias Grothe , who went through all the junior teams in Iserlohn and played for the German junior national team. The former Bundesliga player from Brandt Hagen and Phoenix Hagen was the coach of the Kangaroos from the beginning of the 2010/11 season to 2017.

Other important players included the American center Cunnie Williams and the Lithuanian Gintaras Krapikas (bronze medalist at the 1992 Summer Olympics in Barcelona), who made a major contribution to the club's rise in the early 1990s.

Old Hemberghalle

The junior teams were the heart of the club from an early age. There are nine junior teams in the 2014/15 season, some of which play on a supraregional level, but some only on a district level. The U14A, U16A and U18 are represented in Regionalliga 2. The U12A plays in the NRW league of their age group. Another two youth teams (U14B and U16B) start in the top division.

Home ground

Since 2011, the new triple sports hall on Hemberg has been played. The Matthias-Grothe-Halle, named today after the late trainer, has around 1500 seats and is therefore significantly larger than the old Hemberghalle.
