The Itzehoe Eagles are a basketball club from Itzehoe with an attached dance department for cheerleading . The club was founded from the basketball department of the Sport-Club Itzehoe, with the entire department including the professional men's team being taken over. The men's team, which had previously been known as Eagles , has been playing in the third-highest German division, 2nd Bundesliga ProB , since 2014 .

history

As MTV Itzehoe, the first men's team won the championship title in the 2nd Regionalliga Nord in 2006 under the direction of coach Paul Larysz and thus rose to the third highest German division Regionalliga Nord at the time. The three Americans GJ Macon, Antwon Brown and Bryan McCullough were among the top performers in the championship team.

In the 1st regional league, the team ended up in the midfield in their first three years, in the 2009/10 season they belonged to the top group and came third. The American Kejuan Johnson, who scored 29.2 points per match for the Itzehoer and was named Player of the Year of the 09/10 season in the 1st place by the specialist organ eurobasket.com, played a major role in achieving the best position since the promotion. Regionalliga Nord was awarded. This was followed by further placements among the top three teams (2010/11: third, 2011/12: second). As in previous years, Itzehoe had the help of North American professional players: In 2010/11 the Canadian Tut Ruach directed the set-up and impressed with good statistical values as did the American Martinis Woody, who played under the basket. In the 2011/12 season, the team was led by the American Tyrone Lewis, who was the best scorer in the 1st Regionalliga North with 26.1 points per game. In October 2010 it was decided to transfer MTV to ETSV Gut Heil Itzehoe, then Gut Heil changed its club name to Sport-Club Itzehoe. This merger was officially completed in June 2011, so that the Itzehoer basketball players competed under the name SC Itzehoe from the 2011/12 season.

After the Itzehoer had slipped back into the midfield of the 1st regional league in 2012/13, before the 2013/14 season came the American Everage Richardson, a player who was particularly well-known for his offensive power, who had previously posted an average of 33 points with league competitor Bodfeld. Thanks to this reinforcement, the Itzehoer became regional league runners-up as they did in 2012, again just missing out on the right to promotion to the national division 2. Bundesliga ProB . However, since UBC Hannover sought to withdraw to the Regionalliga Nord, the possibility of an exchange of playing rights arose, which was approved by the responsible 2nd basketball league . In the summer break of 2014, Thomas Sindelar resigned his position as chairman of Itzehoer, after having held this position for the previous 15 years and thus shaped the development of the performance team. His successor was Stefan Flocken. In the ProB season 2014/15 , the club parted ways with coach Larysz in March 2015 shortly before the start of the relegation round after almost ten years. Player Yannick Evans and youth coach Levi Levine then led the team to remain in the 2nd Bundesliga ProB.

In 2015 the basketball division separated from SC Itzehoe and the Itzehoe Eagles eV was founded (founding meeting on March 16, 2015). Volker Hambrock became the first chairman of the new association.

In May 2015 Pat Elzie was hired as head coach, under whose direction the qualification for the play-offs for promotion to the next higher division 2. Bundesliga ProA was achieved for the first time in the 2015/16 season . In February 2017, a youth academy was founded to promote young talent, which was organized in its own association. Former Bundesliga player Flavio Stückemann took over the sporting management of the academy .

In the 2017/18 game year, Itzehoer reached the championship round of the ProB, but were eliminated with 0-2 wins in the first round against Elchingen, the first of the southern season. The U19 team made it into the junior basketball league (NBBL) in June 2018 . Itzehoe was already represented in the NBBL in the 2009/10 season, at that time under the umbrella of MTV.

In the 2018/19 season Itzehoe reached the second round of the 2nd Bundesliga ProB and lost against Gießen II . The team under coach Elzie's leadership completed the points round of the 2019/20 season as champions of the northern season. This was classified as the greatest success in the club's history to date. Since the season on March 17, 2020 was prematurely canceled due to the spread of the SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus , before the championship round began, Itzehoe was awarded the right to promotion to the 2nd Bundesliga ProA as the first in the points round. The outstanding Itzehoe man of the 2019/20 season was the American Chris Hooper: the winger scored an average of 19.5 points, 10.3 rebounds and 3.7 assists per match during the shortened 2019/20 season. Also the Croatian Marko Boksic (12.8 points / game), playmaker Flavio Stückemann (9.4 points and 4.7 basket assists / game), the Dutchman Chaed Wellian (8.7 points / game), Johannes Konradt (8.6 Points / game) and Stefan Schmidt (8.5 points / game) were among the team's top performers. Elzie was named the league's best ProB coach of the season and Hooper was named the best player of the season. With a view to the 2020/21 season, the club decided to submit license applications for both the 2nd Bundesliga ProA and the 2nd Bundesliga ProB. In addition to the economic aspect (drawing up the necessary team budget), the Itzehoers also named the hall issue with the required minimum capacity of 1500 seats as major challenges for a possible ProA promotion. At the end of May 2020, the club's management announced the withdrawal of the license application for the ProA, which was mainly due to the fact that no home venue suitable for the ProA could be found or an existing hall could be prepared accordingly. In the summer of 2020, the club set the goal of wanting to move up to the 2nd Bundesliga ProA in the medium term and positioned itself as an advocate for a major construction project in Itzehoe including the construction of an event hall that would meet the requirements of the second highest German division.
