Patrick "Pat" Elzie (born November 22, 1960 in Troy , Missouri ) is a basketball coach from the USA who has played basketball professionally in Germany with short breaks since 1984 and then coached club teams in the highest German divisions. In April 1994 he became a German citizen.

Career

Elzie played at the United States Naval Academy and then from 1980 studied at the traditional College of the Holy Cross in Worcester ( Massachusetts ), where the legendary Bob Cousy , member of the Basketball Hall of Fame , had once played. After graduating in business administration , he claims to have had trial training at the New York Knicks before he started working as a stockbroker at a bank . A few weeks later he received an offer to play in the German basketball league .

Elzie played a total of four seasons with MTV Giessen from 1984 to 1987 and 1988/89. The greatest success was in 1987 in a team with Michael Koch and Henning Harnisch third place in the championship and the entry into the cup final. That season, Elzie was only able to play less than half of the games. In 1988 he returned to the national division of MTV after he had been under contract with the Swedish first division club Hageby Basket Norrköping in the 1987/88 season . In 1989 Elzie switched to TV Lich. In the following years he played briefly for TuS Bramsche first class and for SG Braunschweig (as a player- coach ) and the BC Johanneum from Hamburg (player and manager) in the 2nd basketball league .

In 1996 Elzie finally moved to the coaching bench and succeeded Ed Visscher at the league competitor from Paderborn . In 1993 he had already acquired the Trainer A license from the German Basketball Federation . After his time in Paderborn, Elzie was active in the southern group of the second division in Langen . In April 2001 he returned to Hamburg and took over the club in the first division, which had now been promoted, but could not prevent relegation. The following year he reached the championship in the second division with the Tigers; The club was not only unable to take advantage of the promotion due to bankruptcy, but also had to start over in the regional league. After Elzie had coached the successor club for a year, he accepted an offer from Syria in 2003 to become national coach there. After missing the Olympic qualification Elzie returned prematurely to Hamburg and coached the regional league team SC Rist Wedel in the second half of the 2003/04 season , which he led to relegation despite an almost hopeless situation thanks to a winning streak.

In 2004 he took over a Tigers team in the top division again , this time the promoted team from Tübingen . In the first season, relegation was achieved, in January 2006 Elzie was released after a series of defeats. In the following years Elzie acted as "Associated Head Coach" next to Horst Schmitz at BG Karlsruhe and also represented him as head coach because of his health problems. When Schmitz finally resigned in mid-December 2006, Elzie was not promoted to the sole head coach . Elzie then took over the second division Kirchheim Knights in January 2007 and managed to stay in the league and qualify for the Pro B with the team . The following season, the cooperation partner of the Bundesliga succeeded EnBW Ludwigsburg even promotion to the Pro A . Shortly before the contract extension, Elzie received an offer from Bremen , which he preferred for family reasons, and he returned to northern Germany.

Due to serious financial problems, among other things, Elzie was released from the Roosters in December 2008. Elzie then became assistant coach for the sporty stumbling polar bears in neighboring Bremerhaven in the top division. ( Strangely enough, the polar bear was also the heraldic animal of the BG Karlsruhe, his first assistant coaching activity in the BBL, which is parallel to his head coaching activities for teams of the Tigers in the BBL. ) After the end of the 2008/09 season, Elzie was an intermezzo as a coach in Cyprus before returning to Germany in November 2009 and coaching the Pro B division club SC RASTA Vechta . He led the SC RASTA Vechta to advance from the ProB to the ProA (2012). After only one year in the ProA, Rasta became champion and rose with Elzie to the 1. Bundesliga (BBL) in April 2013, where Elzie continued to coach the team. After the sporting descent with Vechta at the end of the 2013/2014 season, Elzie withdrew from the post of head coach as a consequence. He stayed with the club, became the coach of the Rasta reserve in the 2nd regional league and coordinated youth work. His successor as head coach was Stephen Arigbabu . In January 2015 Elzie returned to the coaching bench at SC RASTA Vechta after Stephen Arigbabu had previously been fired. However, Elzie could no longer achieve a sporting turnaround and Vechta surprisingly missed the playoffs. After the end of the season Elzie left SC RASTA Vechta for good.

In May 2015 Elzie was introduced as the new head coach of the Itzehoe Eagles in the 2nd Bundesliga ProB . In the 2019/20 game year, Itzehoe became champions of the points round in the ProB-Nord under his leadership. Elzie was named ProB Trainer of the Year in a league poll. Since the season was canceled on March 17, 2020 before the start of the final round due to the spread of the SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus , Elzie's team was awarded the right to promotion to the 2nd Bundesliga ProA as first in the table. However, Itzehoe withdrew the license application for the second highest German division at the end of May 2020.

Others

In December 2016 Elzie's autobiography came out, which was recorded by Klaus Schütz.

Elzie has two sons and a daughter.
