The UBC Hanover was a basketball team founded in Hanover in 2002 , which disbanded in 2014.

description

The abbreviation “UBC” in the name of the club that was launched in 2002 stands for “United Basketball Club”. The founders included the twin brothers Markus and Michael Goch, who shaped the club’s events in terms of management, as a sponsor and also in a sporting sense. When the club was founded, the aim was to “bring Bundesliga basketball back to Hanover”. It was decided to implement an approach that “corresponds to a modern understanding of performance-oriented basketball”.

Michael Goch took over as coach in 2002, the team was usually clearly superior to their opponents in the lower-class leagues and rose year after year. This was partly due to the use of foreign professional players: For example, in the 2005/06 season in the Oberliga Ost, the UBC was reinforced by the Canadian Richard Brenton, the US-American Michael Claxton and at times also by the German-American Ian Bey and Markus Hallgrimson . Professional players from North America (Jason van Eck, Tim Haley, William Bonner) once again made a significant contribution to winning the championship in the 2nd regional league in the 2006/07 season, with Ismail Yaldiz also a German player with second division experience who was part of the team Game year ended without defeat. In the 1st regional league, the UBC came second behind the Osnabrücker SC in the 2007/08 season . Van Eck, Haley and Bonner were again among the top performers, in the meantime David Arigbabu and Jan-Peter Prasuhn , who had first and second division experience, had also joined the squad. The rise succeeded this time as a successor: At the meeting of the 2nd Bundesliga basketball team in early autumn 2008, the UBC was awarded a free place in the 2nd Bundesliga ProB 2008/09. The ProB game year 2008/09 was finished in tenth place in the table. Michael Goch gave up the coaching position in the summer of 2009 after six ascents in a row, but remained responsible as a partner of the licensee UBC Tigers GmbH (founded in September 2007), chairman of the UBC and sporting director. The new coach was Mahmut Ataman , who was one of the UBC founding members in 2002. The medium-term goal in 2009 was to compete in the basketball Bundesliga by 2011 at the latest .

Like the promotion to the ProB, the jump to the second highest German division, the 2nd basketball league ProA , did not succeed in a sporting way. Since teams had waived their right to participate, the UBC applied for a place and was awarded the contract. The award was made through a procedure in which the financial resources, the audience capacity of the arcade and the athletic placement were taken into account. This enabled the UBC to move up from the lowest division to the 2nd Bundesliga without interruption since the club was founded. The home games in the 2nd Bundesliga ProA were no longer played in the university sports hall at Am Moritzwinkel, but in the larger AWD hall . According to his own statement, a supporting program was offered at the home games "which represented a clear contrast to the usual entertainment in German halls". In addition to professional sports, the UBC carried out basketball projects in schools. In December 2010 coach Ataman was sacked, the team was at the time in seventh place in the table. Ataman's successor was his assistant Michael Mai . The team came in the further course of the season in danger of relegation, but managed to stay in the table as twelfth.

On May 4, 2011, the association was refused the license by the association because of an unpaid bill in the amount of 183 euros, against which an objection was raised, which was granted on May 27, 2011 and the license was then granted. The UBC management and the league management had publicly accused each other of misconduct in the context of the dispute. For economic reasons, however, the club gave back the license for the 2nd basketball league ProA on June 30, 2011 and returned to the 2nd basketball league ProB from the 2011/12 season . The home games were then played again in the university sports hall Am Moritzwinkel ("UBC-Dome"). In the 2012/13 game year, the UBC missed the leap into the ProB finals as a table ninth, which had been given as a minimum goal, then and after there had been "increasing disagreements about the leadership and development of the team", the UBC and coach May went separate ways after the end of the season.

Under the new coach Anton Mirolybov , the Hanoverians finished the points round of the 2013/14 season as the leaders of the ProB North Season, but were eliminated in the round of 16 against Baunach. At the beginning of April 2014, Easydisplay GmbH left the team as the main sponsor. The company run by UBC sports director Michael Goch and Markus Goch (managing director of the UBC operating company) had given the team “above-average support” in previous years. According to Michael Goch, the UBC organizers saw no prospect of a prospective promotion to the Bundesliga in April 2014, "as there are neither economic nor structural requirements for training and games at Bundesliga level". According to Goch, there was no prospect of high-class basketball in Hanover because of a “catastrophic indoor situation and a lack of sponsors”. At the end of July 2014, the end of the UBC Hannover was announced, the Goch brothers withdrew from basketball. The UBC Hannover exchanged its right to participate in the ProB with the regional league team SC Itzehoe , so that Hannover could have competed in the regional league. In an interview with the newspaper HAZ, however, Michael Goch made it clear that the UBC would not compete in the regional league. In the meantime, the club had over 100 active members and sent four teams in different leagues to the start. Due to the steadily growing audience interest, sometimes more than 1000 people followed the games of the 1st team. The UBC Hannover eV association was not affected by the dissolution, the cheerleading department remained organized within the association.

Cheerleading

Since June 2011 the UBC has had its own cheerleaders. The team of the UBC Tigers cheerleaders separated from their former club in the summer of 2011 and joined the UBC. The team brought a lot of experience in the field of basketball game accompaniment, as it has been accompanying the games of the UBC regularly since the beginning of 2006. In the spring of 2012, the cheerleading area at UBC expanded even further. The existing and established mixed team of men and women was joined by an all-women team and a junior team. Thus, the sport at UBC could be practiced from the age of eleven. In addition to the games in the basketball season, the Tigers cheerleaders prepare for national and international competitions and train about three times a week. The individual disciplines include: floor exercises, stunts, baskets, pyramids (acrobatics) and dance.
