“I no longer see any possibility of developing meaningful political effectiveness within the framework of the liberal-democratic party in the Soviet-occupied zone. The presumptuous claim of the SED to sole rule, which has been raised louder and louder in recent weeks, would by no means be asserted if this party had not assured itself of the complete consent of the occupying power. But I am not ready to continue the series of sacrifices that I have made to my own convictions - in order to be able to work politically at all. "
