David Arigbabu (born July 5, 1975 in Hanover ) is a former German basketball player . After studying in the USA , where he played successfully in the NCAA college league , Arigbabu was active as a professional in Italy and Belgium for a long time , before returning to Germany in 2004, but only in the 2nd basketball division there until 2011 played. Arigbabu is of Nigerian descent through his father and the younger brother of the former German national basketball player Stephen Arigbabu .

Career

Youth and NCAA (until 1999)

Arigbabu learned the game of basketball at the TK Hannover and went in 1992 for a high school -Year the Mercer Iceland high school in the US state of Washington , with the basketball team winning the state championships in the state. Then Arigbabu joined the SG Braunschweig in the second German league, in which his brother Stephen already played. In 1995, the Braunschweiger moved up to the highest class by increasing the first basketball league . However, David Arigbabu left the club to study in the United States, where he was active at the University of Rhode Island for the university team Rams in the Atlantic 10 Conference of the NCAA. Arigbabu played for the Rams in their most successful phase so far in the late 1990s, when they qualified three times in a row for the national finals between 1997 and 1999 . In 1997 they won the runner-up in the strong A-10 Conference and were able to qualify for the NCAA finals in 1998, in which they surprised the highly favored Jayhawks of the University of Kansas , who were number 1 in their regional group, in the second round . Led by Cuttino Mobley and Tyson Wheeler they reached the "Regional Final" in the quarter-finals Elite Eight , in which they led against the Cardinals of Stanford University in the last minute, but finally lost the game with two points and the prestigious Final Four tournament missed. While Mobley and Wheeler followed in the Draft NBA were chosen, who later led the NBA - All-Star Lamar Odom -10 Conference title A in his only season for the Rams in the following year the team for the first in its history. In the national finals, however, they were eliminated in the first round.

European career (1999 to 2004)

After completing his studies, Arigbabu returned to Europe as a professional and signed a contract with the Italian first division club Müller Scaligera Basket in Verona . Arigbabu was used in the Lega Basket Serie A as a supplementary player for a good 13 minutes per game and reached a twelfth place with the team led by Louis Bullock after regular time. About an additional qualifying round you could still reach the actual play-offs for the Italian championship, where you were eliminated in the semi-final series against the eventual champions Fortitudo Bologna . The championship semifinals meant the qualification for the ULEB Euroleague , which was newly introduced by the ULEB, in the following season. In the ULEB Euroleague 2000/01 they qualified for the round of 16 after leaving the German representative Opel Skyliners behind in the group stage . In the national championship they reached tenth place, but this meant the end of the season due to the elimination of the "pre-play-offs".

For the 2001/02 season Arigbabu moved to the second Greek league A2 Ethniki to Apollon in Patras . After Arigbabu failed to make payments, he left the club at the start of the season and joined the German first division TSK Bamberg at the beginning of November, where he made an excellent debut in the first game in the win against reigning champions Alba Berlin . At the end of December 2001, Dirk Bauermann took over as coach, who had also lost his job in Greece at the beginning of the season. The ex-trainer of Apollon Patras, however, was dismissed by the first division AO Dafni after four games. After a somewhat chaotic season for the Bamberg club, they reached the play-offs in the BBL 2001/02 in seventh place , where they were eliminated in just under five games in the first round.

For the season 2002/03 Arigbabu went back to Italy and played in the second Italian league LegADue for Upea in the Sicilian Capo d'Orlando . Arigbabu could not play a significant role here and left the club in mid-April 2003, while the Sicilians were bottom of the table and relegated at the end of the season because of the poorer direct comparison . For the 2003/04 season, Arigbabu then signed a contract with the Belgian first division club Racing Club Giants from Antwerp . In the following season he made four more games for league rivals Basket Groot from Leuven before returning to Germany.

2nd league and return to Hanover (2004 to 2011)

During the 2. BBL 2004/05 Arigbabu joined the German second division club 1. FC Kaiserslautern, which was always able to place in the top third of the table in the following seasons. In the last season 2. BBL 2006/07 of the regionally staggered second division they finished second in the southern group just behind the promoted POM Baskets Jena . For the 2007/08 season, Arigbabu returned to his hometown of Hanover and played for the regional division UBC, which made it through to the newly created ProB . In the ProB 2008/09 it was only enough to climb up to a tenth place, but with a valid ProA license you could move up to the next higher class after the withdrawal of other teams, which meant the seventh consecutive promotion for the club founded in 2002. Born in Hanover, Arigbabu became the team's identification figure and was also involved in the management of the club. After two seasons in the middle of the table, the financial means were no longer sufficient for another season in the second-highest division ProA, so that one withdrew again into the ProB. Among other things, Arigbabu took this as an opportunity to end his active career before the start of the 2011/12 season and to withdraw completely from the club at the beginning of 2012. After retiring in the second regional league, Arigbabu still plays in the team of his home club TK Hannover.
