Antwerp Giants is a Belgian basketball team whose sponsoring company is called “vzw” and is based in Deurne (Antwerp) . The men's team of the club plays in the highest Belgian league and in 1995 as a fusion of the hitherto most successful Belgian men's team Racing Mechelen Basket and the team Sobabee from Antwerp as Racing Basket Antwerp founded. After the merger, the men won the national double in 2000 and another cup victory in 2007 under a new name as Giants.

history

For the history of Racing Basket from Mechelen : see Racing Basket Mechelen

The 15-time Belgian champions Racing Mechelen was no longer solvent in 1995. The remnants of the professional men's team merged with the club Sobabee, which had previously formed a syndicate with Soba Kiel Antwerp , to form the club Racing Basket Antwerp . Sobabee was founded in Antwerp in 1949 as Lackbors BBC , which became part of the Sobabee association in 1975. In 2005 the new Racing Basket Antwerp was renamed as Antwerp Giants.

In addition to the title successes in the championship and cup in 2000 and in the national cup competition in 2007, the Antwerp Giants also took part in international club competitions. In addition to participating in the ULEB Cup 2007/08 , where they only just failed to advance in the preliminary round against, among others, Allianz Swans Gmunden , the best result in the EuroChallenge was the quarter-finals 2010 . Previously they had reached the round of 16 in competitions of FIBA Europe in the Korać Cup 2000 and the quarterfinals in the Saporta Cup 2001.
