The Basket Swans Gmunden are a basketball club from Gmunden in Upper Austria . The Swans were able to win the championship title three times in a row between 2005 and 2007 and also won the national championship in 2010. In addition, Gmunden won a total of six titles in the cup competition , the last in 2012. This makes the Swans the Austrian record winners in this competition. The same applies to the Supercup, which the Gmundner team have already won seven times (most recently in 2011).
history
In 1965 the Union Gmunden basketball section was founded. After a year, the first game was played in the spring of 1966, but it was lost at 11:35. Thereupon four years later the promotion to the Upper Austrian regional league and after another two years promotion to the 2nd Bundesliga was achieved. After Union Gmunden had stayed in this league for seven years, they finally won the 2nd Bundesliga for the first time under coach Otto Kienesberger and the associated promotion to the Austrian Bundesliga. Although they were relegated straight away, in the following years the first legionnaires were finally signed, with whom the Union Gmunden kept between the first and second Bundesliga.
The biggest success so far followed in 1993: The Swans, as the club had renamed itself, became sensational when they came third in the Bundesliga. After they were surprisingly relegated in 1995, promotion followed in 1997 and from this point on the Swans should hold out in the 1st Bundesliga. After financial difficulties brought the club to the verge of collapse, a new club was founded.
After all, the Swans were able to win their first Austrian championship title two years later, in the 2004/05 season, under coach Bob Gonnen , after they left a 2-0 lead in the final in the 2002/03 season . A success that they were able to repeat in each of the following two years.
ULEB Cup
In the 2007/08 season the Basket Swans Gmunden take part in the ULEB Cup . This competition is the second most important European basketball competition after the ULEB Euroleague .
Already in the first competition game - an away game against the Israeli team Hapoel Galil Elion - the first victory in the club's history in a European competition was achieved. In the penultimate group game, the Antwerp Giants were defeated with 80:69 and thus the promotion to the 1/16 final of the ULEB Cup was fixed. In the end, the Swans finished Group E in 3rd place with 5 wins and 5 losses and thus achieved promotion to the 1/16 finals. Here the Swans lost both games against the eventual winner of the ULEB Cup, Joventut de Badalona .
Venue
The Swans play their home games in the Volksbank Arena, which can hold 2500 spectators. After the 2007/08 season this was expanded, as the hall with the original capacity of 1750 seats was too small for international competitions and the Swans were only allowed to participate in the ULEB Cup with an exception.
