The BSC Raiffeisen Panthers Fürstenfeld are a basketball club from Fürstenfeld in Styria founded in 1955 . The first team was represented in the Bundesliga until 2019.
Venue
The Panthers play their home games in the Fürstenfelder Stadthalle, which can hold up to 2,000 people and was built in 1985.
history
The sports teacher Franz Mathias introduced basketball in the Fürstenfeld Middle School and thus in Fürstenfeld in the school year 1951/52 with the words "The great students to me" . Baskets were soon installed on the open space in front of the Bundesrealgymnasium and in the hall.
On December 4, 1955, the Fürstenfelder registered the basketball department as part of the gymnastics club with the Styrian Association. A year later, the Oststeirer took part in the championship for the first time and in the second season managed to move up from 1st class to the regional league. A girls' team was also founded.
In 1968 the Fürstenfelder became Styrian champions for the first time. However, the club had to forego the promotion games because a suitable hall and financial basis were missing. Some players then migrated to ABC Graz and ATSE Graz . In 1970 the scene was repeated and only a small remainder of the very strong team remained. The connection to the top clubs was lost. In 1972, the basketball players signed off from the gymnastics club Fürstenfeld and founded the BSC Spezi Fürstenfeld sponsored by Saischegg . In 1979, the leap into the B league was risked. The home games had to be played in Graz, as there was still no suitable hall in the former district capital. The descent followed.
The breakthrough came with the resurgence in 1986 and the commitment of the two US players Harry Bell (1987) and Clarence Swearengen (1988), who led Fürstenfeld in 1994 to the A-League and straight away into the European Cup. In their first international appearance, the team survived the first round, but then had no chance against the world-class team from Athens . 1996 followed another relegation to the B-League with immediate promotion.
Since the 1997/98 season, the Fürstenfelder has been an integral part of Austria's top division. In 2000 and 2001, the Panthers , as the club now calls themselves, led the A-League table for over 300 days. In the final for the championship title in 2002, BSC Raiffeisen Fürstenfeld lost to Styrian local rivals Montan Bears Kapfenberg . The fifth game of the final series in front of over 2,000 spectators in the completely sold-out Fürstenfelder Stadthalle was only lost after the second extension with 107: 109. The Panthers' achievers were Johnny McNeil , Roland Miller and Aaron Mitchell .
Before the 2006/07 season, BSC Raiffeisen Fürstenfeld saw a change of president and at the same time a concentration of forces. The former GAK President Harald Fischl took over the presidency and the function of chairman. His three deputies are his two predecessors, Josef Rath and Alois Bonstingl, as well as Helmut Jörg. After reaching third place, the team was completely reorganized before and during the 2007/08 season. With Miljan Goljovic the former top scorer of the Euroleague 1999/2000 was acquired.
In the semi-final series against the Swans from Gmunden, the Panthers from Fürstenfeld emerged as the winners 3-2. The final opponent was a local rival with the Oberwart Gunners . After a balanced series, the Raiffeisen Panthers Fürstenfeld narrowly won the decisive fifth game at the Oberwart Gunners with 89:88 and thus became Austrian champions for the first time. Point Guard Anthony Shavies was voted Best Player of the Final Series .
In the 2008/09 season, Fürstenfeld celebrated its first cup win in history: The Panthers defeated Wels in the final just 80:79. Fürstenfeld also met Wels in the championship semi-finals, but lost the series against the eventual champions with 1: 3. Harald Fischl caused a stir, who wanted to get his players to step down in the fourth and final semi-final game in order to protest against the referee's appointment. At this point in time the Panthers were behind with 20 points, the game was finally lost with 110: 125.
At the start of the 2009 season, the Panthers won the Supercup for the first time in their second attempt . The Panthers prevailed against WBC Raiffeisen Wels with 77:68.
In the 2015/2016 season, the Panthers were able to top the table for the first time in five years, led by Marko Car and Gary Ware. In June 2018, the Panthers were refused the Bundesliga license in the first instance because of a lack of evidence of economic efficiency. Eligibility to participate was later granted subject to conditions.
In September 2018, President and Chairman Karl Sommer resigned from his offices, since 1991 he had served the association in various functions. In the same month, the previous assistant coach Adnan Bajramovic was introduced as the new head coach. In addition to his role as the top performer of the team, Croatian Marko Car became the sporting director. In March 2019, Bajramovic was dismissed for sporting reasons, and his successor in the coaching office until the end of the 2018/19 season was the German Peter Stahl , who took up a third term in Fürstenfeld, but was unable to prevent the team from playing at the end of the 2018/19 season last place in the table. Stahl then moved to the office of chairman, his successor as coach was introduced during the summer break of 2019: John Griffin . In the run-up to the 2019/20 season, the team was denied the right to play in the country's highest league. The club previously plagued money worries. From then on, Fürstenfeld appeared in the second division. After the license refusal, the agreed collaboration with coach Griffin did not materialize, the Italian Flavio Priulla took over the coaching position.

In the 1999/2000 season, the club also started with a second team, which promptly won the championship title in 1st class and has played in the Styrian regional league since then. Overall, the regional league title was won six times and the Styrian Cup four times. The team consists of former or retired players from the Bundesliga teams between 1990 and 2005.
