Desmond Penigar (born July 16, 1981 in DeQuincy , Louisiana ) is an American basketball player . After completing his studies, Penigar was named "Rookie of the Year" 2004 of the NBA Development League and was about to sign a permanent contract in the highest-endowed professional league, the National Basketball Association (NBA), in which he played 10 games for the Orlando Magic. After he failed to make the permanent jump to the NBA, he played two seasons each in the German and Austrian top division after a season in South Korea . He was most recently active in Lebanon in the 2014/15 season .

Career in the USA

After graduating from high school in Upland, California, Penigar went to “Ventura College”, a community college in the town of the same name in the same US state . The most famous graduate of that college to go professional basketball is former NBA all-star Cedric Ceballos . This college's Pirates basketball team plays in the California Community College Athletic Association (CCCAA).

After two years at Community College, Penigar went to Utah State University in Logan in 2001 , whose basketball team Aggies play in the NCAA Division I Western Athletic Conference . In 2002 they won the regular season of the Conference and in 2003 the final tournament of the Conference, in which Penigar was named MVP of the final tournament. In the ensuing national final , they missed the eventual runner-up, the number 2 on the regional seeding list of the University of Kansas Jayhawks , after a three-point defeat in the first round, only just a surprise. Penigar himself missed a double-double as top scorer with 25 points, compared to 22 points from Keith Langford on the winning team, and as top rebounder of the game with 9 boards . He led his team in all statistical categories except assists .

In the NBA Draft 2003 Penigar was not considered, but could recommend himself for a place in the D-League team Asheville Altitude . In February 2004 he was called to the NBA team Orlando Magic for two so-called ten-day contracts, for which he completed ten games. He then returned to the Altitude team and was named Rookie of the Year in this league at the end of the 2003/04 NBDL season . In addition, he was twice appointed "player of the month" ( German  player of the month ) and in the "All-NBDL-First Team" of the season and was top scorer of the entire league at the end of the season . During the final game, which his team won 108-106 after a clear half-time deficit in extra time and became champions, Penigar injured his elbow, which is why he could no longer participate in extra time. During the summer break, he played individual preseason games in the Denver Nuggets jersey , but did not get a contract for the following season.

Professional in Asia and Europe

After he remained unconsidered for the 2004/05 season in the NBA, Penigar hired during the season in South Korea. After the end of the season he finally moved to the German basketball league for the following season to the EWE Baskets from Oldenburg . However, after knee surgery in the summer, the rehabilitation phase lasted longer and he only played four games during the regular season. In the play-offs 2005/06 , which Oldenburg just reached as eighth, Penigar was able to fully participate again and force the main round first Alba Berlin into a fifth and decisive game, which was lost, however. In the following season 2006/07 Penigar could indeed be used in all games and scored with 16.7 points and 6.7 rebounds per game best values in his team, which he belonged to the top ten of these categories within the league, the team himself, however, narrowly missed the return to the play-offs for the German championship in ninth place .

After the end of the 2006/07 season, Penigar was without a contract and, according to his own account, took care of opening a store in his home country. It wasn't until the end of January 2009 that he made a comeback with the Austrian champions Panthers from Fürstenfeld in the ABL . The Panthers had recently won the Cup , among other things with the support of Bryan Lucas , against whom Penigar played in the NBDL semifinals in 2004 and defeated the Asheville Altitude on the way to the championship. Penigar himself then achieved internal team best scores with 20.3 points and 9.3 rebounds per game, which reached third place in these categories across the league. However, the defending champion Panthers lost the play-off semi-final series against eventual champions WBC Wels and was unable to defend his title. Instead, they beat the Welsers in the Supercup as before in the cup final at the beginning of the following season . At the beginning of this season, the new team captain Penigar had to serve an eight-game suspension and achieved slightly weaker personal statistics over the season with 19.3 points and 7.3 rebounds, but the Panthers were the top-seeded team after the main rounds and into the final series move in, where they lost to Allianz Swans Gmunden in the fifth and decisive game at home .

In the 2011/12 season, Penigar was under contract in Byblos , Lebanon , where he was the top scorer of the league while his team did not reach a top ranking. The following season he moved to Kuwait , where he played for runner-up Al-Kuwait SC.
