Upland is a city in San Bernardino County in the US state of California with around 77,000 inhabitants (as of 2017). The city is known for Mount Baldy (actually Mount San Antonio ). The urban area has a size of approximately 40.5 square kilometers.

After Upland was founded in 1906 by George Chaffey and William Chaffey, the urban area consisted mainly of agricultural land, mainly for grapes and citrus fruits. Today you can recognize this former structure by streets such as Euclid Avenue - streets that run through the city from north to south with trees between the two lanes. Between 1888 and 1933 traveled between Upland and the neighboring communities of Ontario , San Antonio Heights and Claremont an initially by mule-powered tram .

From south to north, the elevation of 358 m at the intersection of Euclid Avenue and 7th Street increases by a good 250 m for a length of seven kilometers to the 610 m high intersection of Euclid Avenue and 24th Street. The Mount San Antonio , regional and Mount Baldy called, is the highest peak in the San Gabriel Mountains and is located approximately 15 kilometers north of Uplands northern city limits to 3068 meters.

Upland has 73,732 inhabitants (as of the 2010 census). history

Spanish rule

Upland is at the foot of the San Gabriel Mountains , on a route used by both Indians and Spanish missionaries. Today this route is known as the Old Spanish Trail .

In 1774 Juan Bautista de Anza reached California via Arizona . His route, and thus today's Juan Bautista de Anza National Historic Trail , also led through what would later become the Upland. A year later, Anza set off with 240 travelers on his second expedition, which led over more than 3,200 kilometers to the Bay of San Francisco . The group reached the San Gabriel Mission further west on January 4, 1776.

Even after Anza's expeditions, the San Gabriel Mission remained an important stopover for expeditions from Arizona. After the march through the desert, travelers could replenish their supplies here. The increasing number of trips led to the establishment of an outpost of the mission station further east. In 1810, therefore, missionaries, soldiers and Indians of the mission under the direction of Padre Dumetz were commissioned to find a suitable location. On May 20th, 1810, they reached the San Bernardino Valley and named it after St. Bernardine of Siena , who celebrates its feast day on May 20th. The land around the later Upland was baptized Cucamonga , which means "sand place" in the Tongva language .

Until the time of the Mexican ranchos, the lands that are now part of Upland were used as grazing land for cattle for the San Gabriel Mission. When the areas of the mission stations fell to the state under Mexican rule, the Rancho Cucamonga was awarded to Tiburcio Tapia in 1839 . This included not only the area of the present-day city of Rancho Cucamonga , but also the present-day urban area of Upland. The size of Rancho Cucamonga was estimated in 1886 at 53 km².

Establishment of Upland

After the end of the Mexican-American War , California became a state of the United States. As a result, American settlers began to settle in the new lands, particularly during the California gold rush in the mid-19th century. The Canadian shipbuilder George Chaffey reached the later upland in 1882. He acquired a 25 km² area of Rancho Cucamonga and important water rights on San Antonio Creek for 60,000 US dollars. Through additional purchases, he later expanded his land to approximately 32 square kilometers for a total of $ 90,000.

Chaffey's idea was to convey the water to his lands via cement pipes and to divide it up among the farms there. It shouldn't matter how far the farms were from the water source, just how big their leased properties were. Chaffey also had eleven kilometers of Euclid Avenue built as a thoroughfare to connect both ends of his estate. Street lights were placed a mile apart along the street and a tram was built to service Euclid Avenue. Land was available for purchase on November 1, 1882, and in the first week Chaffey sold 77 acres for $ 28,500.

To ensure the success of his irrigation system and at the same time to attract new settlers, Chaffey founded the San Antonio Water Company on October 25, 1882, in which every landowner was automatically awarded shares.

The settlement gained fame primarily for the cultivation of citrus fruits, even if other types of fruit were grown in 1882 for reasons of cost. In 1889 there were already eight km² of orchards for growing citrus fruits, which was estimated to be the second largest population in California.

The current city of Upland emerged from the northern part of Chaffey's planned settlement Ontario , which was previously known as North Upland or Magnolia . The current name was first used by the "Upland Citrus Association" and was used from 1902 for the northern part of Ontario.

The railway reached Upland as early as 1887 and the core settlement was built near the route of the Southern Pacific Railroad . Now the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway completed their connection to North Ontario. A depot of the railway company was to be built on Second Avenue, the main shopping street; the cost of construction was calculated at $ 7,000. In the decades that followed, numerous warehouses were built on the rails. The rail link was important for both freight and passenger traffic and connected Upland with Los Angeles in the west and the rest of the Santa Fe network in the east.

Ontario was granted city rights in 1891, but the area was very small at 1.3 km². In 1901, requests were made for the first time to register the northern part as a separate city, but this option was not realized because the urban area of Ontario was enlarged to 26 km². However, Upland residents were concerned about the expansion, as the areas that were to be added to Ontario included the Upland post office, the railroad line and the railroad depot. On March 12, 1906, after negotiations, the San Bernardino Board of Supervisors decided that an election should be scheduled. On May 5 of the same year, 183 residents of Upland finally voted for the establishment of their own city, 19 against. On May 15, the California Secretary of State approved the incorporation. The area actually belonging to Upland, which was annexed to Ontario in 1902, was subsequently transferred to Upland in 1935.

Later story

With the San Antonio Hospital , Upland received its own hospital in 1907, and four years later a volunteer fire department . After a fire in 1913 destroyed all the shops on the east side of Second Avenue south of Ninth Street, a second fire station was established in 1915 .

Upland was on the National Old Trails Road , the first national trunk road to connect the east and west coasts. Within the city, the route ran on Foothill Boulevard, which was created on the route of the Spanish explorers. In 1926 the western part of the National Old Trails Road merged into the famous Route 66 .

Due to the better roads and the increased importance of the car as a means of transport, the Upland tram ceased operations in 1928. Citrus cultivation continued to flourish in the following years, and by the 1930s citrus became the dominant crop in the state of California.

In 1954, the San Bernardino Freeway was completed as a link between Los Angeles and San Bernardino . Today it is part of Interstate 10 . The San Bernardino Freeway was one of the first highways in the US and made it easier for professionals to commute between the two regions. The road also accelerated Upland's development into an urban community.

Demographics

According to the 2010 census , the population was 73,764. The urban population thus recorded an increase of around 5000 people within ten years. According to the census, around two-thirds of the population were white, while Latinos and Hispanic immigrants made up the second highest proportion. African Americans made up around seven percent of the population. Broad population groups such as Asians are minorities of around one percent of the population. According to the 2010 census, there were around 25,000 households in Upland.

In 2017 the population was 76,999.

Upland is part of the 25th District in the California Senate , currently represented by Democrat Carol Liu . In the California State Assembly the place is assigned to the 41st District and is thus represented by the Democrat Chris Holden . At the federal level, Upland's northern part of California belongs to the 27th  congressional constituency , which has a Cook Partisan Voting Index of D + 11 and is represented by the Democrat Judy Chu . Most of the areas south of 14th Street belong to the 31st Congressional constituency. He has a PVI of D + 5 and is represented by Republican MP Gary Miller .

Attractions

Madonna of the Trail

In 1929, the Daughters of the American Revolution women's movement erected a Madonna-of-the-Trail statue at the intersection of Foothill Boulevard and Euclid Avenue. There are a total of twelve Madonna-of-the-Trail statues that mark the course of the National Old Trails Road; the one in Upland is the westernmost statue. An inscription commemorates Jedediah Smith , who was the first American to reach California by land in 1826.

Route 66

Upland is on the former Route 66 . Although the trunk road no longer existed in 1985, remnants of the famous route are still visible on Foothill Boulevard today.

Euclid Avenue

Euclid Avenue has been on the National Register of Historic Places since 2005 . From Foothill Boulevard to 24th Street, a five-kilometer bridle path runs in the middle of the two-lane street, which is also used by pedestrians and joggers.

Historic Downtown Upland

The oldest part of Upland is east of Euclid Avenue between 8th Street and Arrow Highway. A group of traders has formed the Historic Downtown Upland to jointly promote the district and thus strengthen it. In the downtown there are 200 shops around that offer various goods and services. The Upland Farmers Market is held in the city center every Thursday from April to October.

Economy and Infrastructure

traffic

Upland itself is home to the Cable Airport , which only operates general aviation . The nearest major airports are Los Angeles-Ontario Airport and Los Angeles International Airport .

Interstate 10 runs along the southern city limits and Interstate 210 in the northern city limits . Upland is also cut in an east-west direction by California State Route 66 , part of the famous Route 66 , and in a north-south direction by California State Route 83 ; The latter follows the course of Euclid Avenue in Upland, the existence of which can be traced back to the time the city was founded.

The city has a train station on the Metrolink route network . It is on the San Bernardino Line, which connects Los Angeles Union Station with San Bernardino . The line was laid out in 1887 by the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway and has been used by Metrolink since 1992. Today's Metrolink station in Upland is therefore where the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway was built in 1937. The former station building itself now serves as a shop. The Metrolink route is also used by freight trains from the BNSF Railway .
