Bocanegra was appointed to the US national team by Bruce Arena in January 2001, but was not used for the first time against South Korea until December 9 . His second season in Chicago was negatively affected by an ankle injury.
In the next two years he developed into one of the best players in the country and was voted the best defender of the season in both 2002 and 2003. In the national team, too, Bocanegra became more and more a regular player and attracted attention with his five appearances at the 2002 Gold Cup . In the same year he trained for two weeks at the Dutch club Feyenoord Rotterdam , but then moved to the English club Fulham in January 2004.
There he quickly found himself in the team and came straight away to a total of 43 league appearances for the remainder of the current 2003/04 season and in the subsequent 2004/05 season. During the qualification for the World Cup in Germany, Bocanegra was one of the most important players and acted there on both the inside and the left full-back position.
For the 2008/09 season, the American moved to the French first division club Stade Rennes. There he was in his first season in all 38 league games on the field.
In July 2010 he signed a 2-year contract with league rivals AS Saint-Étienne , but moved after one season to the Scottish record champions Glasgow Rangers where they signed until 2014.
On November 15, 2011, he made his 100th international match in a 3-2 win against Slovenia .
