Barstow is a city with 22,639 inhabitants ( 2010 ) in San Bernardino County in the US state of California . It is located at the foot of the Calico Mountains in the Mojave Desert , about halfway between the major cities of Los Angeles and Las Vegas . The urban area covers an area of 87 square kilometers.
history
The city was named after the president of the Santa Fe Railway Company, William Barstow Strong .
The town is still shaped today by the railroad, in the north the BNSF Railway 's marshalling yard extends over eight kilometers . Barstow is located at the intersection of Interstate 15 and Interstate 40 , which starts here. Historic Route 66 ran through the town before it was abandoned.
At first the place was a place of discovery for gold and silver , a decade later the economic boom followed.
