Peter Popoff

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Peter Popoff (born July 2, 1946 in East Berlin , Germany ) is a former television preacher who was active in the USA in the 1980s and who claimed to be in direct contact with God as a " prophet " and through his spirit to be able to heal .

A large part of his income came from donations, which he received mainly from elderly and sick people seeking help. During his appearances in large halls he amazed people by apparently randomly knowing people from the audience through God by name and even knowing their diseases. He won over the audience by assuring those called of God's blessing and allegedly relieving them of their ailments. Popoff managed to make $ 4.3 million a month tax-free at his prime, according to James Randi .

Popoff's career as a faith healer ended abruptly when James Randi showed him the use of a radio receiver that was not visible to the public. Through this Popoff received all information about the people he called up, which he then declared as God's input. In 1987 his organization went bankrupt. Then he established a business with supposed miracle water, which in turn targeted the same target group, old and sick people.

The methods of Popoff and other TV preachers were in 1992 by Steve Martin in the film Leap of Faith ( Leap of Faith ) satirizes . In the 1989 film Fletch - The Jack of all trades , Popoff and his methods were also satirized.
