Ibrahim Diarra

Ibrahim Diarra , called Ibi , (born November 12, 1973 ) is a former Swedish professional basketball player who played 35 times for the Swedish national team. Most recently he was under contract with the Skyliners Frankfurt .

Diarra is the son of a Swedish mother and an African father. He started his career in Stockholm . He lived there with his parents, who met at university in the capital. At the age of eleven he came into contact with basketball for the first time in school sports, and as a teenager he also played handball . He received basic basketball training in the youth department of the Stockholm Capitals and made it to the men's team at the age of seventeen. With the "Capitals" he won the Swedish championship in 1993/94.

After several years in Stockholm, he had made a name for himself in Sweden. He was called up to the national team. This was followed by a move to the New Wave Gothenburg Sharks , in 1998/99 he then played for the Norrköping Dolphins . In 1999 he decided to move abroad and accepted a contract offer from BSC Raiffeisen Panthers Fürstenfeld from Austria . The trainer of the Panthers was looking for a defensive specialist and was at the right address with Ibrahim. He stayed in Austria for two years.

In 2001 the Swede switched to the Skyliners Frankfurt in Germany. The Frankfurt coach Gordon Herbert knew him from his time at Fürstenfeld's Bundesliga rival Oberwart Gunners , when Diarra and his team faced Herberts Oberwarter. With Frankfurt, Diarra also took part in the EuroLeague. The Swede's strengths lay in defense work, he was known for his team-friendly style of play. After a year in Germany he returned to his home country and strengthened the Södertälje Kings in 2002/03 . Frankfurt brought him back in September 2003. The sporting highlight of Diarra’s career was winning the German championship with the Frankfurt team in 2004 . After the 2006/2007 season, he ended his career as a professional basketball player. In his last professional year he was team captain of the Frankfurt team, although he only had the role of a supplementary player. Diarra played a total of 138 Bundesliga games.
