Bob Gonnen

Robert "Bob" Gonnen (born March 15, 1941 ) is a former American - Israeli basketball coach. Under his leadership, Gmunden became Austrian national champion three times, and Gonnen received the title “Trainer of the Year” four times in Austria.

career

Gonnen moved from Riverside, Illinois to Israel in the mid-1960s . There he coached club teams and at the end of the 1970s was also an assistant on the coaching staff of the Israeli national team.

In 1998/99 he was voted “Coach of the Year” in the Netherlands after he had led Den Helder to the championship title. In 1999 he also acted as the Dutch national coach, between 1995 and 1997 he had already coached the Israeli junior national team.

In 2002 he took over the position of head coach at Swans Gmunden in the Austrian Bundesliga and was to shape an era together with star player De'Teri Mayes . In 2002/03 Gonnen led the "swans" to their first cup victory in club history and to the runner-up championship. Gonnen was named “Coach of the Year” by the Bundesliga. In the 2003/04 season, more triumphs followed: Again they won the cup competition and reached the championship finals. In addition, there was the win of the Supercup. In 2005 Gonnen led the "Swans" to their first win at the state championship and was named "Trainer of the Year" for the second time. In 2006 he managed to defend his title, and Gmunden again won the Supercup under Gonnens leadership. In 2007 the successes were repeated: for the third time in a row national champion, again Supercup winner, Gonnen received again the award as “Trainer of the year”. In the 2007/08 season he led Gmunden among the best 32 teams in the ULEB Cup , where they lost to Joventut de Badalona (who ultimately won the European Cup that season) with the later NBA players Rudy Fernandez and Ricky Rubio . In addition, Gonnens “swans” won the cup competition and the Supercup again that season. In 2008/09, Gonnens last season in Gmunden, he led his team to the runner-up and again won the title of “Coach of the Year”.

Prior to the 2009/10 season, Gonnen was signed by Bundesliga rivals Panthers Fürstenfeld . In September 2009 he won the Austrian Supercup with Fürstenfeld for the sixth time in his coaching career. At the end of February 2011 there was a separation between Gonnen and the club.
