Den Helder Kings is a Dutch basketball club from Den Helder .

history

Development of basketball in Den Helder

The history of basketball in Den Helder begins in 1948 when the sports club HAV Den Helder set up a basketball department. At the end of the 1970s, the members of the basketball team decided to isolate themselves from the parent club and to found an independent club.

BV Noordkop

This happened shortly after the team's promotion to the Eredivisie , the highest league in the Netherlands. The club was active from the first season 1981/82 in this league independently under the name Basketbal Vereniging Noordkop (short: BV Nordkoop ). The first seasons turned out to be very difficult, it was always fought against relegation, which could always be prevented. In the 1984/85 season, the team took part in the Korać Cup , where it failed in the second round.

For the 1985/86 season, the former coach of the Dutch national basketball team Ton Boot was hired, and his appointment quickly paid off. Den Helder came second in the regular season and reached the final of the championship in the play-offs, which was lost to Nashua Den Bosch . In the following year Boot led the team again into the play-off final, which was lost again to Den Bosch.

The golden years

The 1988/89 season ended in second place. BV reached the championship final a third time, again the series champion Den Bosch was the opponent. In contrast to the two previously lost final series, Den Helder managed to win once in Den Bosch, so that the team won the first championship for the club. Now Noordkop was the dominant team in the Dutch league, winning three more championships in a row in 1990, 1991 and 1992. In addition, the Dutch basketball cup was won in 1992. After these five titles, Ton Boot left the club for ABC in Amsterdam .

In the first two years after Boot's departure, the team failed in the semi-finals. Championships five and six were won with the coaches Meindest van Veen (1995) and Maarten Tromp (1998).

European Cup

Thanks to its success in the national league, the club has taken part in many European competitions during this period:

Decline

After the turn of the millennium, the performance of the team deteriorated and BV only occupied places in the middle of the table. For the 2005/06 season, the club withdrew from the first division due to financial problems, and in 2007 reported back under the name Den Helder Steals . But the club had to withdraw again and initially disappeared into lower-class leagues.

The Heroes Kings

A new attempt is being made under the name Den Helder Kings, who have been playing in the top basketball league again since the 2012/13 season and achieved a good sixth place, but failed in the play-offs in the quarter-finals due to the GasTerra Flames .
