history
The national team of the Netherlands joined FIBA in 1946 . In the same year the team already took part in a European championship, which they finished sixth. Eleven more participations followed by 1979. The fifth place at the EM in 1949 was the best result.
The best tournament in the history of the national team was played at the 1983 European Championship . The team survived the preliminary round with three wins from five games and was tied with Germany . Due to the direct duel won (79:67), they ultimately ranked second ahead of the Germans and reached the semi-finals. There the Netherlands had no chance against Italy and lost 69:88. The game for third place against the USSR was clearly lost with 70: 105, so that in the end the fourth place was occupied.
In their only participation in a basketball world championship , at the 1986 World Cup in France , the Dutch were just eliminated in the preliminary round with two wins out of five games and came in 14th. Since eighth place at the European Championship in 1989, no participation was possible for 26 years one more major international tournament before the team qualified for the 2015 European Championship .
