The Austrian national basketball team represents Austria in international basketball tournaments. The team plays in Division B of FIBA Europe .
history
The first international tournament for the Austrian national team was the 1947 European Championship in Prague . The team finished the tournament as 12 of 14 teams. Also in the following European Championship tournaments, the team finished between 11 and 16. After the European Championship in 1959 , Austria did not take part in any more European Championships until 1977 .
For the Olympic tournament in 1960 a qualification was necessary for the first time, for which the Austrian team was registered. The team finished 12th out of 18 and was therefore not qualified. Austria also failed to qualify at the Olympic tournaments that followed in 1964 , 1968 , 1972 , 1980 and 1984 .
In 1977 Austria took part in an EM again after a long break. The team could not win any of the seven games and finished 12th and last place. The next participation in a European Championship qualification took place in 1995 , when again the qualification was not reached, just like in 1997 and 1999 . At the European Championships in 2001 you got into the qualifying finals, the promotion to the finals of the EM did not succeed. Since the European Championship in 2005 Austria has played in Division B of the European Championship. Also in 2005 they made it into the qualifying games, which were lost to Macedonia. In the following tournaments, the Austrian national team regularly achieved placements in the midfield of Division B.
