The Croatian basketball national team was founded 1992nd The Croatian team achieved their greatest success in the same year at the Summer Olympics in Barcelona . The players won the silver medal of the tournament and at that time only had to admit defeat to the professionals of the US Dream Team . Further successes include two third placements at the European Basketball Championship in 1993 and the European Basketball Championship in 1995 . The Croatian basketball team also won the bronze medal at the 1994 basketball world championship .

history

The beginnings of basketball in what is now Croatia are connected with the stay of the American William Weilland. As a representative of the American Christian Youth Association , he stayed in Zagreb in 1924 and introduced the new sport at that time. Thereafter, the Croatian Basketball Federation was founded on December 19, 1948. Before the breakup of the former Yugoslavia , the Croatian Basketball Federation was part of the All-Yugoslav Basketball Federation until November 17, 1991.

To the successes of the former all-Yugoslav national basketball team it should be added that basketball players from Croatia won a total of 27 medals out of a total of 60 in international competitions and 6 gold medals out of 12 in the Olympic Games . In eight of the nine successes of the former, gesamtjugoslawischen national basketball team at European and World Championships were at least 5 players of Croatian origin in being a player summoned. Among the best known were: Petar Skansi , Damir Šolman , Ratomir Tvrdic , Kresimir Cosic , Željko Jerkov , Nikola Plečaš , Zvonko Petričević , Josip Đerđa , Mihovil Nakic , Andro Knego , Stojko Vranković , Velimir Perasovic , Toni Kukoč , Dino Rađa , Arijan Komazec , Žan Tabak , and Dražen Petrović . In addition, Croatian club teams such. B. Jugoplastika Split (POP 84), today KK Split , or Lokomotiva Cibona, today Cibona Zagreb , most important European club title. The Croatian Basketball Federation was incorporated into the World Basketball Federation FIBA on January 19, 1992 .

At the 1992 Olympic Games , the Croatian selection was beaten only by the American Dream Team and won the silver medal. However, it was the only time that the " Golden Generation " of Croatian basketball competed in a final round, as Petrović was killed in a car accident the following year and other players were canceled for individual tournaments, partly due to injury. Nevertheless, Croatia reached the semi-finals unbeaten at the European Championship in 1993 , the World Championship in 1994 and the European Championship in 1995 , where, however, they were twice subject to the Russian selection and once to Lithuania . Oddly enough, you met Greece in the third place match in all three tournaments and won all of these games. The 1996 Olympic Games brought in only a seventh place, and with the subsequent generation change followed years of lack of sporting success. It was not until 2008 that the qualification for the Olympic Games succeeded in participating in a tournament held on a global level.
