history

The Croatian-influenced basketball club HKK Široki Brijeg was founded on April 5, 1974 by the high school and physical education teacher Stanko Jelčić and a group of his students.

After the establishment of the basketball club, the first games took place under the club name Mladost ('youth') on the basketball hard court of the grammar school in Široki Brijeg . The first basketball league game was played against the Troglav basketball club from Livno . Through further competitions, HKK Široki Brijeg established itself in the group south of the second basketball league in the formerly all- Yugoslav republic of Bosnia-Herzegovina. The basketball club played successfully in this league until 1989. In a qualifying round that took place in the Bosnian-Herzegovinian town of Maglaj in 1989 and meant eligibility to play in the first professional basketball league of the Yugoslav republic of Bosnia-Herzegovina, the team won against the direct competitors of Radnički ('workers') from Goražde and Troglav ( 'Dreikopf') from Livno.

Due to the Bosnian War , the game was stopped. In 1994 the club was renamed "Široki" and took part in basketball league games in the so-called Croatian Republic of Herceg-Bosna . There the club won the basketball championship in 1997/1998.

With the addition of the club name Široki Hercegtisak , the club was a three-time basketball champion and basketball cup winner of Bosnia-Herzegovina. The club successfully took part in competitions in the Goodyear League . Participation in the Saporta Cup and Korać Cup followed . With participation and good results in the ULEB Euroleague and the ULEB Cup , the small basketball club from the canton of West Herzegovina has since established itself in the European basketball family and is considered to be a good representative of Bosnia-Herzegovina in Europe alongside the Bosnian-Herzegovinian basketball club KK Bosna Sarajevo Basketball parquet.
