Bosnian basketball before independence

The beginnings of basketball in Bosnia and Herzegovina go back to the 20s of the 20th century . After the sport spread in neighboring Croatia around 1924 after the stay of the American William Weilland , basketball also gained popularity in Bosnia. The Bosnian basketball association was founded on April 3, 1950 as part of the Yugoslav basketball association and remained under the Yugoslav umbrella organization until Bosnia and Herzegovina declared independence in spring 1992 . As part of the Yugoslav national team, many Bosnian-Herzegovinian basketball players contributed to medals and victories at the Olympic Games, FIBA - basketball world championships , as well as European basketball championships . KK Bosna Sarajevo achieved great success on April 4, 1979 when they became the first Yugoslav basketball team to win the European championship title.

The Yugoslav national team , which at the 1984 Olympic Games as the defending champion won the bronze medal in Los Angeles, were among Dražen Dalipagić , Ratko Radovanovic , Sabit Hadžić and Emir Mutapčić to only four players who were born in Bosnia. Previously, Yugoslavia had become Olympic champions with Dalipagić and Mirza Delibašić , who later both were inducted into the FIBA Hall of Fame , and with Radovanović after the boycott of the United States in Moscow in 1980 . Delibašić had to retire in 1983 after an intracerebral hemorrhage , but was later named Bosnia's Athlete of the 20th Century before he died in 2001.
