Basketball isa popular team sport in Russia . The national teams of Russia, and in particular the former Soviet Union, are among the most successful basketball teams of all.

National basketball competitions

The Russian basketball champion was determined in the basketball Superleague (Russia) until the 2008/09 season . After a bribery scandal, the top 10 Russian clubs joined the newly formed Professionalnaja Basketbolnaya League . The Russian Basketball Association gave the new league the right to determine the Russian champions for three years. From the 2013/14 season the Russian champions will be determined in the VTB United League from among the 9 participating Russian teams, which has existed as a private league since the 2009/2010 season. In addition, the Superleague 1 Russia continues to exist with 14 teams as the second highest division. The Superleague 2 is the third highest league and consists of a total of 14 teams in the divisions.

The national teams of the Soviet Union and Russia are among the most successful national teams in the world. The most successful period was before the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991, when sport in general had a higher political importance in the Soviet Union. Women

For women, two Russian teams are among the top clubs in Europe. The UGMK Yekaterinburg won the Euroleague Women twice . His rival Sparta & K Widnoje achieved this success four times in a row.
