BK Spartak Saint Petersburg ( Russian БК «Спартак» Санкт-Петербург ) is a Russian professional basketball team from Saint Petersburg .

history

BK Spartak was founded in 1935, making it one of the oldest basketball clubs in Europe. As early as 1937 Spartak started in the Soviet championship. After the war years, Spartak returned to the top division in 1958 and played there continuously from 1960 to the end of the Soviet Union in 1991. The club had its heyday in the 1970s, with Alexander Below as an outstanding player. After a third place in the Soviet championship in 1969, the team reached the final of the European Cup Winners' Cup in 1971 , which was lost to Simmenthal Milano . Spartak won this European Cup in 1973 after beating Jugoplastika Split in the final and again in 1975 against KK Red Star Belgrade . Spartak won the Soviet championship in 1975 and was the only club that was able to interrupt the championship dominance of CSKA Moscow between 1969 and 1984. After Below's death, Spartak won the Soviet Cup twice in 1978 and 1987 and, after the collapse of the Soviet Union, the CIS championship in 1992.

After many years without success, the club only won their next national title in 2011 when they won the Russian Cup. Although Spartak had participated in various European cup competitions even after the collapse of the Soviet Union, the first notable success was only achieved in 2011, when they only lost in overtime with 92:94 against Telenet Oostende in the game for third place in the EuroChallenge . The next year (2012) Spartak started in Eurocup and failed in the semifinals to eventual winners BC Khimki . After the financing of the club by the city of St. Petersburg was stopped at the end of the 2013/14 season, Spartak stopped the professional game operations of its first team.
