PBK Lokomotive Kuban Krasnodar ( Russian ПБК "Локомотив-Кубань" ) is a Russian professional basketball club from Krasnodar , Russia . The club takes part in the VTB United League and the EuroCup.

history

The history of Lokomotiv began in Mineralnye Vody in 1946 . In the first few years after the war there were few volunteers who wanted to play basketball. The youngsters were trained by experienced mentors - railroad workers Grigory Abugov and Nikolai Kharchenko. Grigori Abugov later became a famous coach who trained a number of high profile professionals.

Lokomotiv played in the premier league for several years until she was finally promoted to the elite of national basketball in 1994. In 1999 Lokomotive was granted the right to represent Russia in European tournaments and won the International Railways Sports Union Cup.

In the 2002/03 season, Lokomotive just reached the playoffs and finished 8th out of 10 places, where they were defeated in three games against champions CSKA Moscow . Many realized that change was necessary. The decision was therefore made to relocate the association to a more developed and economically growing area - the Rostov area.

The basketball club Lokomotiv Rostov was founded in Rostov-on-Don in 2003 . The project was led by Andrey Vedischev, bronze medalist of the European Championship and the Basketball Superleague.

For the next six years the club played in the city of Don. In those years the team of the "Railway" was one of the strongest in Russia: regular participation in the playoffs in national and international leagues. The best performance of Lokomotiv in these years was the 5th place in the basketball Superleague (season 2006/07) and the final of the FIBA Europe Cup (season 2004/05). In the summer of 2009, the President of the Russian Railways , Vladimir Yakunin , made the decision to move the association from Rostov-on-Don to Krasnodar. The main reason for this was that the arenas in Rostov did not meet the requirements of the basketball Superleague and the club's international leagues.

First year in Krasnodar (2009-2010)

After the move, it was renamed Lokomotiv Kuban. Lokomotiv's first season in Krasnodar was under Sašo Filipovski. The season has got off to a successful start for the rail team. Krasnodar came close to the away win against CSKA in the first round , then won four times in a row and took 2nd place in the table. The second half of the season was not so successful, Loko lost and slipped to mid-table by the end of 2009

Sašo Filipovski was replaced by the head coach of the Lithuanian national basketball team - Kęstutis Kemzūra .

After losing all chances of staying in the EuroChallenge , Lokomotiv focused on the Russian league. Under Kęstutis Kemzūra, the team showed stable results. Gerald Green was the team's most efficient player after the second half of the season, center Grigori Shukhovtsov received an invitation to the Russian national basketball team at the end of the season.

2010/2011 season

The direction that Kęstutis Kemzūra chose for the team improved the position in the season that brought the team up to fourth place in the PBL and into the final of the EuroChallenge, where Loko lost to Krka .

2011/2012 season

In the 2011-12 season Lokomotiv Kuban spent under coach Božidar Maljković and reached the EuroCup Top-8, they also won bronze in the Russian league. The right to take part in the second most important European club tournament, the EuroCup, was granted to Lokomotiv last season when it managed to reach the final of another European club tournament - the Eurochallenge.

The next season the team from Krasnodar looked confident despite the fact that it was fresher in the European Cup. With the second group result in the group - 4 wins in 6 games - Lokomotiv went into the top 16, where they met Lietuvos Rytas , Pallacanestro Treviso and Alba Berlin . In the quarter-finals, Lokomotiv met Khimki , who also became champions in the end.

In addition to its debut in the EuroCup, the club from Krasnodar also played in the VTB United League (Eastern European Championship) for the first time. Lokomotiv demonstrated top basketball in the regular season, got into the playoffs and finished in fourth place.

2012/2013 season

Yevgeny Juryevich Pashutin took over the position of head coach in 2012/2013. In line with the goals set for the club, the squad has been significantly improved. Nick Calathes , Mantas Kalnietis , Aleks Marić , Derrick Brown , Alexey Savrasenko , Simas Jasaitis , Valery Likhodey were signed. During the season, Richard Hendrix came to join the team. At the EuroCup final on April 13, 2013 in Charleroi, the club from Krasnodar won against the Spanish Bilbao with 75:64 and not only won the most prestigious trophy in its history, but also the ticket to the EuroLeague for the next season.

2013/2014 season

In the 2013-14 season, the team made their debut in the EuroLeague , made it into the top 16 and fought against the strongest European teams. Derrick Brown was named EuroLeague MVP of the Month for November. Lokomotiv started the VTB United League Playoffs with two wins against CSKA. But the Moscow club won the last three games, and Lokomotiv were eliminated in the quarter-finals. At the end of the season, the management decided not to extend the contract with coach Yevgeny Yuryevich Pashutin .

Season 2014/2015

The new coach Sergei Valerianowitsch Bazarevich began to form the club's squad with management. Marcus Williams , Aleks Marić , Valery Likhodey and Simas Jasaitis left the team. At the same time, Anthony Randolph , Malcolm Delaney , Aaron Miles , Nikita Kurbanov , Evgeny Voronov and Nikita Balashov were signed to join the team. One of the main priorities that the president of the club mentioned was returning to the EuroLeague by winning the EuroCup or participating in the VTB United League final. Both goals were not achieved.

Promotion to EuroLeague Final Four (2015/2016)

Lokomotiv Kuban signed Georgios Bartzokas as the new head coach. They also received a wildcard for the Euroleague 2015-16. The star players for Kuban were Malcolm Delaney and Anthony Randolph , who were elected to the All-EuroLeague teams. Your opponent in the semi-finals of the Final Four was the Russian team CSKA Moscow.

On November 14, 2016, a one-year contract with the new head coach Saša Obradović was signed .
