Nicholas William "Nick" Calathes ( Greek : Νικόλαος Καλάθης , born February 7, 1989 in Casselberry , Florida ) is a Greek - American basketball player .

Career

Calathes began his career in 2007 at the University of Florida , where he played for two years with the Florida Gators . In 36 games of his second NCAA season, the point guard achieved an average of 17.2 points, 5.3 rebounds and 6.4 assists .

In 2009 Calathes moved to the Greek record champions Panathinaikos Athens , where he signed a three-year contract. In the same year he was selected in the NBA Draft by the Minnesota Timberwolves in 45th place, but then transferred to the Dallas Mavericks . With Panathinaikos, Calathes was able to win the national championship in his first season and thus also the first professional title of his career.

In 2013, after a stopover at Lokomotive Kuban Krasnodar , Calathes joined the Memphis Grizzlies in the NBA . In February 2014 he was voted Rookie of the Month at the Western Conference . He spent two seasons in Memphis. In 129 games he averaged 4.6 points, 1.9 rebounds and 2.7 assists.

In 2014, Calathes tested positive for tamoxifen and banned from 20 NBA games for this doping rule violation .

After the 2014/15 season , Calathes left the Grizzlies and returned to Panathinaikos. With this he became Greek runner-up and cup winner in 2016 . In the EuroLeague season 2016/17 he just barely missed a possible triple double on October 26, 2016, in the game against Brose Bamberg , after he scored 13 points, 11 rebounds and 9th in the 84:83 points win against the German champions Assists came.

National team

With the U-20 national team of Greece Calathes took part in the 2008 European Championships in Latvia . In six encounters, Calathes averaged 11.2 points, 3.5 rebounds and 3.7 assists.

In 2009 he made his debut in the men's selection and took part in the European Championship , which he was able to conclude by winning the bronze medal. At EuroBasket 2015 , Calathes was the first development player of the Greek selection, which was narrowly eliminated by Spain in the quarter-finals.
