Summer break

During the summer break, the ESAKE committee presented the new main sponsor of the competition, B2B GAMING SERVICES (MALTA) LTD . The league was henceforth run under the new name BETSHOP Basket League . The teams Peristeri, Lavrio and the Panathinaikos also competed under a new name. The beverage manufacturer Vikos AE had not extended its cooperation as main sponsor with Panionios BC and decided instead to work with the Peristeri club. The freight company Aegean Cargo Management , founded in 2001, presented its collaboration with GS Lavrio, which was also registered for an international competition for the first time this season, and the betting provider OPAP extended its collaboration with Panathinaikos, which it was to accompany as a name sponsor for the next two years .

The Ifaistos association , which was founded in 2017, declared that it had secured the gaming license for GS Larisas Faros . The Limnos- based club was therefore eligible to play in the Basket League from this season.

management

Changes worth mentioning during the summer break:

  • Nikos Vetoulas has been the trainer of the Rethymno CRETAN KINGS for the past year and a half, and this season took over as trainer at the Kolossos H-HOTELS in Rhodes . There he replaced the previously emigrated Aris Lykogiannis, who in turn had switched to AE Holargos. After the sixth match day, the club had released Vetoulas, who was immediately presented to the second division club Ionikos Nikaias AFFIDEA as the new main responsible. The Kolossos, on the other hand, who had won six games up to that point, announced an agreement with Kostas Flevarakis a few days later. This was released again in mid-February and the team was taken over by Stergios Koufos.
  • David Blatt, former head coach of the Cleveland Cavaliers , was installed at Olympiakos as the successor to Giannis Sfairopoulos. Blatt, who last worked for Basketbol Süper Ligi , had already coached Aris Saloniki for a short period in 2010 and was therefore no stranger to the Greek league. The Lithuanian Kęstutis Kemzūra followed him to Piraeus as an assistant coach . Thus, in addition to Sfairopoulos, Milan Tomić had also left the club, who had worked as an assistant coach at Olympiakos since 2008 under various coaches. A few days later he was introduced by Red Star Belgrade as their new head coach. Tomić signed in Belgrade for the next three years.
  • In the previous season, Luca Banchi had coached Fiat Torino, who played in the Eurocup , and then Brose Bamberg, who were represented in the EuroLeague , before he had signed a one-year contract in Athens at the beginning of July 2018 in order to be responsible for the AEK.
  • Thanasis Skourtopoulos , coach of the Greek national team , agreed with Panionios on a commitment for the upcoming season this summer. However, since the following imminent changes in the highest club level were announced, Skourtopoulos resigned from his agreement before he even took up his new office. The season preparation was taken over by Chris Chougaz with whom the club started the new season. At the end of October, this was released from the then newly installed club management and the club was headed by the former Qatari national coach Vasilis Fragkias from the fifth match day . Chougaz took over the Czech first division club BC Brno just a few days later, while Fragkias asked for his resignation after the sixth matchday for personal reasons. Discussions of the club management to persuade Chougaz to return failed and Panionios was taken over by Nikos Oikonomou from the seventh match day . For the former national player, who had already led Panionios in the second division in the 2016/17 season, it was his coaching debut in the Basket League. At the beginning of February 2019, Oikonomou was replaced by its predecessor Fragkias.

Player personal details

Changes worth mentioning during the summer break:

  • Nick Calathes remaining at Panathinaikos was one of the cornerstones of the club's future squad planning for the capital club. The playmaker had signed a contract for three more seasons. With the contract extension of Nikos Pappas , the series champion had tied another important player from his own ranks to himself for another two years. Guard Mike James , who had moved to the Italian league , and Chris Singleton, who moved to Spain to FC Barcelona , had left the club. These failures were compensated with the obligations of Stephane Lasme and Keith Langford . Lasme had already played for Panathinaikos in the past and with the return of Giorgos Papagiannis another former player of the Athens returned, who had agreed to a contract termination with the Portland Trail Blazers and thus against remaining in the NBA .
  • Ioannis Papapetrou learned to play basketball in the youth department of Ilysiakos before moving to the United States at the age of 16 to play high school and college basketball . Upon his return to Greece, he began his professional career at Olympiacos, with whom he signed a five-year contract that expired this summer. Since the national team player could not agree on a new contract with his club, he switched to league rivals Panathinaikos after checking further offers. At Olympiakos, the loss of Papapetrous was compensated for by signing Aleksandar Vezenkov . Vezenkov left the Aris and the Basket League in 2015, from which he received the "Best Young Player" award several times in order to play at FC Barcelona.
  • Leonidas Kaselakis returned to the Basket League as a two-time Kazakh champion and cup winner and was one of the first signings of the Promitheas Patras. For their premiere season in the Champions League, the western Greek club also secured the services of Michalis Tsairelis and Dimitris Katsivelis . Tsairelis came from league rival Aris while Katsivelis, who played alongside Kaselakis at BK Astana in the 2016/17 season, had played his previous season at PAOK.

Main round

management

Changes in management for the current season:

  • For the past nine years, Stavros Mikoniatis had mostly accompanied the Rethymno CRETAN KINGS as co-interim coach before he was offered the post of head coach for this season. The coach, born in Nikea in 1971 , was relieved of his duties in mid-November after Rethymno had failed to win the first six games and was replaced by Vangelis Ziagkos. Ziagkos, who had looked after the Panionios the previous season, had started this season as head coach at the Cypriot APOEL Nicosia before he returned to Greece. Mikoniatis remained with Rethymno in a different capacity.
  • Rick Pitino, a legendary coach in US college basketball , met in Athens on December 26, 2018 to inherit coach Xavi Pascual, who had been dismissed a few days earlier. Pitino had signed a contract until the end of the season and should lead Panathinaikos back to success in the Euroleague, which at the end of the year, behind his claims, was not on a rank that entitled to playoff participation. For Pitino this was not his first international experience, the native New Yorker had already coached the national team of Puerto Rico in the past .

14th Olympiacos Piraeus Forced relegation by association

After the Olympiakos team did not play for the playoff first leg of the quarter-finals against the Panathinaikos team for the Greek championship, it was punished with a fine and forced relegation according to the statutes of the basketball association EOK. The first leg was rated with a 0:20 point defeat and the second leg was canceled. All games in the main round were rated with a defeat for Olympiakos, which meant that Olympiakos found themselves in the last place. The club would have to relegate together with the already established relegations of the main round, Rhodes and Lavrio. However, a few weeks later it was announced that AE Holargos would merge with Kolossos Rhodos and GS Kymis with Lavrio's. Thus, the two actual relegated remained in the Basket League, while Holargos and Kymi, due to the loss of their professional status, had to leave the first division and returned to the amateur area.
