Chris Chougaz ( Greek Κρις Χουγκάζ , born September 6, 1968 in Alexandria , Egypt ) is a former Greek basketball player and current basketball coach . As a small forward , rarely also as a power forward , he played in the highest divisions in Greece , Austria and Germany . He has worked as a trainer in Cyprus and Mexico , among others .

Career

player

Chougaz began his professional career in 1987 with the Panionios basketball club in what was then A1 Ethniki and celebrated the success of the Greek Cup in 1991 . He then moved to the AS Papagou club, but returned to Panionios after just one season. A year later he moved to league competitor GS Larisa before he made his way into the basketball league in 1996 . Chougaz played for Steiner Bayreuth , which two years later became the BBC Bayreuth . After that, the Greeks were drawn back to the domestic league and signed with Team Near East, a club which is based in Kesariani . In 1999 he moved to Austria for one season , in the then A-League , to the Swans Gmunden . From 2000 the forward played for OFI Crete , then for ANO Liosia before ending his career with Sporting Athens in 2003 .

Trainer

Chougaz began his coaching career in 2005 as an assistant at Panionios and stayed there for three years. Between 2008 and 2010 he initially assisted Kostas Pilafidis, then later Evangelos Alexandris at EK Kavalas , before he took over his first post as head coach at the then relegation-threatened first division club Iraklis Saloniki in February 2011 . After finishing his engagement in Thessaloniki he took over the second division OFI Crete for the following season 2011/12 . In the summer of 2012, Dimitris Priftis left the first division club EK Kavalas and Chougaz was his successor. In addition to the Basket League , the Kavala basketball club has also committed to compete in the Balkan League . There the club initially remained undefeated in their home games, but in the domestic league it set four defeats in the first four games and Chougaz was released from his club again. In the same month, Chougaz took over the Cypriot first division club Apollon Limassol , remained there until the end of the season and then moved to the Mexican basketball league . For the 2013/14 season he took over the first division club Correcaminos UAT Victoria, but ended his engagement there in early December 2013 and returned to Apollon from Limassol . In the 2014/15 season he took over the relegation threatened Panionios in January 2015 and replaced Alexandris there, under whom he once worked as an assistant in Kavala.

In summer 2015 he accepted a corresponding offer from the Admiral Basketball Bundesliga and became head coach of the Oberwart Gunners for the 2015/16 season . This led him to the first double in the club's history. After the domestic cup success , the Gunners also secured the championship. For this achievement, Chougaz received the ABL Coach of the Year Award. With the completion of his contract, he accepted an offer from the Czech Republic and moved to USK Prague as the main manager .
