AO Sporting Athens ( Greek Α.Ο. Σπόρτιγκ Αθηνών ) is a Greek basketball team from the Athens district of Patisia . The men's division currently plays in the Gamma Ethniki, the fourth highest league in the country.

Men

history

Sporting Athens was founded in 1936 by Greeks who emigrated from today's Istanbul and were previously members of the Sporting Club Constantinople , which was founded in 1924 .

In 1939 and 1940 Sporting reached the final of the Greek championship, but both times had to admit defeat to city rivals Panellinios . In 1945 the club won the championship final. Since Greece was still occupied by German troops at that time, the title could not be officially evaluated and went down in the club's history as the freedom cup. In 1946 and 1947 Sporting again reached the finals for the Greek championship and was again defeated in both games by Panathinaikos Athens . In 1979 the club took part in the European Cup for the first time and started in the Korać Cup .

In 1982, the club rose from the A1 Ethniki for the first time . Since then, Sporting has been promoted and relegated several times and has achieved a total of three championships in the A2 Ethniki , the second highest Greek division.
