Dimitris Papanikolaou ( Greek Δημήτρης Παπανικολάου , born February 7, 1977 ) is a former Greek basketball player and current assistant coach of the Greek national team .

Player career

Dimitris Papanikolaou belongs to the generation of Greek basketball players that caused an international sensation in the late 1990s. After some successes at European Youth Championships, Papanikolaou was a member of the U-19 national team, which was unbeaten world champion in 1995, including a. clearly defeated the Americans.

The 2.02 m tall forward began his career with the Athens club Asteras Neon Liosion. In 1993 he moved to Sporting Athens. Two years later and after the success at the U-19 World Cup, he signed a contract with Olympiacos. After a brief stint at Makedonikos , he finally moved to Panathinaikos Athens and was one of the few players who went on a basket hunt for Panathinaikos Athens as well as for its arch-rival Olympiacos Piraeus. With Panathinaikos, Papanikolaou was able to win four championships, three trophies and the ULEB Euroleague before moving to city rivals AEK Athens in 2007 .

Papanikolaou was an integral part of the Greek national team until the summer of 2005 and made 131 appearances.

Coaching career

In January 2012 Papanikolaou took over the coaching position at his former club AEK Athens. In May 2012 he signed a contract with the Greek first division club Ilisiakos Athens . Since 2013 he has been assistant coach of the Greek national team .
