Makedonikos ( Greek Μακεδονικός ) is a Greek basketball club from Thessaloniki , whose professional men's team was based in Kozani between 2001 and 2006 .

history

Makedonikos rose for the first time in its history in 2001 in the top division of Greece . Until then, the club played in Thessaloniki , where it was founded in 1928. In view of the fact that three top division teams have already played in Thessaloniki ( Aris , Iraklis and PAOK ), the president and club owner Konstantinos Mesaikos decided to move his club to Kozani, around 150 km to the west. Above all, he hoped that this measure would generate greater audience response, since in Thessaloniki, between the fan camps of the large, established clubs, there were only few chances of being able to keep the class in the long term.
At that time, Makedonikos was an integral part of the Greek basketball league and managed to bring important Greek basketball players such as Georgios Sigalas or Dimitris Papanikolaou to Kozani every year .

Makedonikos achieved the greatest international success under the coach Argiris Pedoulakis in the 2004/2005 season in the ULEB Cup . After the club had caused a stir in the same competition last year, it made it to the final in the following year, in which, however, he was defeated by just 74:78 against Lietuvos Rytas from Lithuania .

At the beginning of the 2006-2007 season, the team went back to Thessaloniki.
