basketball

history

Panellinios' basketball division was founded in 1929. In the very first year, the young team managed the feat of winning the Greek championship. In the following years and up to the Second World War, Panellinios was one of the best addresses in Greek basketball. In addition to the two championships in 1939 and 1940, this was also reflected in second place in 1935.

Even after the end of the Second World War, the club was able to build on its old successes. In the period from 1946 to 1960 Panellinios was able to win the Greek championship again in 1953, 1955 and 1957 and occupy three second and three third places. The championship from 1957 was awarded in a playoff. Panellinios was tied with Olympiacos Piraeus at the end of the season in first place in the table. In the end, Panellinios won the all-important game, despite injury concerns, with 62:60.

The players of this "Golden Team" formed the backbone of the Greek national team at that time, which was represented at the Olympic Games in Helsinki .

In the following years, Panellinios was able to land among the best teams at the end of the season - but it should never be enough for a championship until today. The low point marked the 1985/1986 season. For the first time in history, the club was relegated to the A2 league. Although they rose again immediately in the coming year, but had to go back to the second division after another season in 1988. This state of affairs lasted until 2004 when the club, under new management, managed to rise again.

After the club left Athens in the 2010/2011 season to play its home games in Lamia , Panellinios moved to Thessaloniki in the summer of 2011 .
