Most recently he played in the handball Bundesliga for HBW Balingen-Weilstetten . Before that he played with TuS Nettelstedt-Lübbecke , VfL Gummersbach , HSG Wetzlar and temporarily with the Rhein-Neckar Löwen . In his first game for Nettelstedt-Lübbecke against his former club Rhein-Neckar Löwen on December 30, 2009 Alvanos scored six goals and thus contributed to the surprising success against his ex-club. It was contractually agreed between the two clubs that Alvanos may not be used against his former club. However, such agreements are not permitted. After the defeat, Thorsten Storm , manager of the Rhein-Neckar Löwen, spoke of fraud: It was a clear agreement. And whoever doesn't stick to it is a fraud. After the 2011/12 season Alvanos left HBW Balingen-Weilstetten and moved back to Greece. There he won the championship in 2012/13 and was a cup winner. In 2014 he repeated the triumph in the Greek Cup.
He has played over 200 international matches for the Greek men's national handball team . At the 2004 Olympic Games , he reached 6th place.
