Factors

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Fakelore is a suitcase word from fake and folklore that the North American folklorist Richard M. Dorson coined in 1950 in his article Folklore and Fakelore in order to distinguish authentic oral tradition from deliberately fabricated products that claim to be folklore but are not.

If Dorson, in his Fakelore article in the Encyclopedia of Fairy Tales, refers to the view of some scholars who regard facelors as a "force with a dumbing effect," it should describe his own position. In contrast to the related term of folklorism , which German post-war folklore brought up, fakelore is a very strong judgmental term. Critics point to the problem of being able to convincingly distinguish between genuine and falsified folk tradition in view of the diverse interactions between the two areas.
