Folklorism
Folklorism is a term that was discussed in folklore and later found its way into everyday language. It goes back to the remarks of the Munich folklorist Hans Moser : With his 1962 essay On Folklorism in Our Time and the article Folklorism as a Research Problem of Folklore , which appeared two years later , he stimulated a long-lasting specialist discussion. Moser wanted folklorism to be understood as the "mediation and continuation of second-hand folk culture ". Using examples from custom research , he tried to prove that the “playful imitation of folk motifs in a different social class” was already common before the Second World War, but that folklorism is characterized by commercial use, for example advertising and tourism .
Moser's considerations are - according to the accusation that was soon voiced and which was formulated in connection with the so-called folklore "debate on folklorism" - based on "relic thinking" ( Bausinger ). In addition, the idea of a “primal function” ( Köstlin ) resonates in them .
While the problem area was still being discussed and developed further within folklore in the 1970s and 1980s, the debate subsided during the 1990s. The folklorist Martin Scharfe , who himself criticized the term several times, recently suggested that the process should be understood in a more general and non-judgmental way as “compromising”.
Fakelore is an even more disparaging term than folklorism for purposefully fabricated folklore .
