Athanasios Rotimi "Thanasis" Antetokounmpo ( Greek Αθανάσιος "Θανάσης" Αντετοκούνμπο, born July 18, 1992 in Athens ) is a Greek basketball player who plays on the position of the small forward. His two younger brothers Giannis and Kostas are also professional basketball players.

Career

At club level

Thanasis Antetokounmpo was born in 1992 in Athens, the second of five children of the Antetokounmpo family. There he grew up with three of his siblings in the Sepolia district of Athens . The Antetokounmpo couple had immigrated from Nigeria to Greece in the early 1990s , while their only son, Francis, who had been born until then, had stayed with his grandparents in Lagos . At the age of 14, Thanasis and his two years younger brother Giannis were discovered and approached by Spyros Veliniatis romping around on the street. Veliniatis, basketball trainer in the youth department of Filathlitikos OA in Zografos , a suburb of Athens, initially accommodated the brothers at the local association AO Triton and then in the academies of Filathlitikos after those responsible for the association had campaigned for a new home for the Antetokounmpo family in To organize Zografos so that they could take part in the training regularly and free of charge. The younger siblings Kostas and Alexis also started playing basketball at Filathlitikos.

For the 2012/13 season, the club, in whose first team Thanasis played and his brother had already made his debut, rose to the second Greek league for the first time . The team only narrowly missed promotion to the first-class Basket League on the last day of the season. Just like his brother, Thanasis applied for the NBA draft in the summer of 2013 , but, unlike his brother, withdrew his registration. However, Thanasis came under the Development League Draft 2013 on November 1 with the Delaware 87ers . With an average of 12 points, 4.3 rebounds, 2.1 assists, 1.2 steals and 1.3 blocks, Thanasis showed good performances in the D-League, with nominations for the D-League Slam Dunk Contest and the D-League Defense Third Team were honored. Thanasis eventually applied again for the NBA draft.

With the 51st pick in the 2014 NBA draft , Antetokounmpo was selected by the New York Knicks . He followed his brother Giannis, who had a good rookie season at the Milwaukee Bucks , into the NBA . For the Knicks, Thanasis had first played in the NBA Summer League and then on their farm team at the Westchester Knicks before joining the main team for the 2015/16 season . Shortly before the start of the regular season, however, he was released from the squad again. Antetokounmpo turned down offers from Europe and decided to play in the D-League again.

On January 29, 2016, Antetokounmpo signed again with the New York Knicks, who had offered him a 10-day contract. At the time, New Yorkers were in a crisis that culminated in the dismissal of Head Coach Derek Fisher . Antetokounmpos contract was then not extended, he returned to the Westchester Knicks and played his season there to the end.

In summer 2016 Antetokounmpo returned to Europe and signed a one-year contract with MoraBanc Andorra in the Spanish ACB league . After he had fulfilled this, he was committed for two years by the Greek series champion Panathinaikos . With this he won the Greek championship in both seasons and in 2019 also the club cup .

On July 16, 2019, Antetokounmpo signed a contract with the Milwaukee Bucks and returned to the NBA .
