Kostas Ndubuisi Antetokounmpo ( Greek Κώστας Αντετοκούνμπο , born November 20, 1997 in Athens ) is a Greek basketball player who is under contract with the Los Angeles Lakers in the NBA .

Career

At club level

Adolescent years (1997-2018)

Kostas Antetokounmpo was born in 1997 in Athens , the fourth of five children of the Antetokounmpo family. There he grew up with three of his siblings in the Athens district of Sepolia . The Antetokounmpo couple had immigrated from Nigeria to Greece in the early 1990s, while their only son, Francis, who had been born until then, had stayed with his grandparents in Lagos . The Antetokounmpo, who grew up in rather poor conditions, began playing basketball at Filathlitikos OA in Zografos , where his two older brothers Thanasis and Giannis already played. After living in Zografos for a few years, the Antetokounmpo family moved to the United States in the summer of 2013 after Giannis Antetokounmpo was considered by the Milwaukee Bucks in the 2013 NBA draft . There Kostas attended the Dominican High School in the Whitefish Bay community in Milwaukee County .

Antetokounmpo played college basketball for two years at the University of Dayton before signing up for the NBA Draft in the summer of 2018 , where he was selected 60th by the Philadelphia 76ers and immediately transferred to the Dallas Mavericks . He made his debut for Dallas in the NBA Summer League in Las Vegas in a game against the Phoenix Suns . After further good impressions in the Summer League, the Texans offered him a " two-way contract ".

NBA (2018–)

As contractually stipulated, Antetokounmpo spent its debut season mainly with Dallas' " farm team ", the Texas Legends . For the team playing in the G-League Antetokounmpo came to forty missions, while he was only considered in two games in the NBA by the Mavericks. In the summer of 2019, the management decided not to plan any further with the Greek for the upcoming season and put him on the so-called “waivers list”.

The Toronto Raptors showed interest in the young forward, but according to the rules of the NBA, a team that was poorly placed in the preseason has a priority on a player on this list and can take over this if necessary with the old contract. So Antetokounmpo switched to the Los Angeles Lakers where his two-way contract was continued.

National team

With the Greek U20 selection, Antetokounmpo took part in the European Junior Championship (DIV. B) in 2016, where Greece finished the tournament in third place. He made his debut for the senior squad on August 8, 2019 in a friendly against Iran , which Greece won 82:69.
