Frank Paul Vogel (born June 21, 1973 ) is an American basketball coach who is currently the head coach of the Los Angeles Lakers in the NBA . Previously, he was a scout for the Lakers, Washington Wizards, and assistant coach for the Boston Celtics and Philadelphia 76ers , as well as head coach for the Indiana Pacers and Orlando Magic .

education

Vogel grew up in Wildwood Crest, New Jersey and graduated from Wildwood High School in 1991. He then attended Juniata College in Huntingdon, Pennsylvania, before moving to the University of Kentucky in 1994 . While Vogel himself had played basketball in the NCAA Division III at Juniata College , he took over the position of student manager for the basketball team of the Kentucky Wildcats in Kentucky during the 1994-95 season under Rick Pitino . In 1998 Vogel graduated from the University of Kentucky with a Bachelor of Science degree in biology.

Coaching career

Vogel also gained his first experience in the NBA under Rick Pitino from 1997 to 2001 as video coordinator for the Boston Celtics . After Jim O'Brien took over the post of head coach, he was promoted to his assistant coach. Together with O'Brien, Vogel joined the Philadelphia 76ers in the 2004/05 season . He then worked as an advance scout for the Los Angeles Lakers and the Washington Wizards. 2007 Vogel was again assistant coach to Jim O'Brien at the Indiana Pacers. After he was released by the Pacers in 2011, Vogel took over the team as an interim coach and led it into the playoffs for the first time since 2006. He was then officially appointed head coach on July 6, 2011.

Before the Eastern Conference semifinals of the 2011/12 NBA season against the Miami Heat , Vogel received special attention for his criticism of the supposed theatrics of his opponents, who had a particular tendency to "flop" (comparable to the swallow in football). In this context, he also indicated that it would be interesting to see how the referees would react to this behavior. The NBA fined Vogel $ 15,000 for his comments.

On April 7, 2013, the Pacers secured the title of the Central Division for the first time since the 2003/04 season and ended the season with a record of 49 wins and 32 losses in third place in the Eastern Conference. After victories against the Atlanta Hawks and New York Knicks, the Pacers were only eliminated from the playoffs in the Eastern Conference Finals after seven games against the Miami Heat.

Vogel was in charge of the selection for the Eastern Conference at the 2014 NBA All-Star Game . Vogel's contract with the Indiana Pacers was extended on October 8, 2014 to the end of the 2015/16 season. At the end of the 2015/16 season , the Pacers parted ways with Vogel. Just about two weeks later, Orlando Magic signed Vogel as their new head coach on May 20, 2016. On April 12, 2018, he was released as a coach.

After a year without a coaching job, Vogel returned to the NBA for the 2019/2020 season and was introduced as the new head coach of the Los Angeles Lakers .
