Anthony Marshon Davis Jr. (born March 11, 1993 in Chicago , Illinois ) is an American basketball player . He was selected first in the 2012 NBA Draft and is considered one of the best players in the NBA - especially in his position. Davis has been under contract with the Los Angeles Lakers since summer 2019 .

High school and college

Davis was already considered an outstanding basketball talent in the United States as a student at Perspectives Charter High School in Chicago. He was honored as the best player at the Jordan Brand Classic together with James McAdoo , and he has also received several high school All-American awards. He also took part in the Nike Hoops Summit and contributed 16 points, 10 rebounds and 2 blocks to the victory of the USA against a youth world selection.

For the 2011/12 season, he enrolled at the University of Kentucky after receiving numerous other scholarship offers, including from DePaul University , Ohio State University, and Syracuse University . In college, Davis quickly became a key player in the Wildcats game under star coach John Calipari . Together with his teammate Michael Kidd-Gilchrist , he led the team and advanced to the NCAA finals with the Wildcats . There you defeated the University of Kansas . Davis was named Best Player of the Season for his performance. He also won the award for best defender and freshman of the season. During his only college season for Kentucky, Davis averaged 14.2 points, 10.4 rebounds and 4.7 blocks per game. He also set Shaquille O'Neal's block record . After winning the NCAA Division I Basketball Championship , he announced his move to the NBA. Calipari later said of his protégé that Davis was a player who only appeared once every ten, twelve or fifteen years.

NBA

New Orleans Hornets / Pelicans

Even before the 2012 draft , Davis was a contender for first place in the NBA selection process. That prediction came true: He was selected first by the New Orleans Hornets . Together with Austin Rivers , whom the Hornets selected in tenth place, Davis should bring the club, which was recently weakened by the departure of Chris Paul , forward.

Davis in his rookie season

In the win against the Charlotte Bobcats on November 10, 2012 Davis got 23 points, 11 rebounds and 5 blocks. This made him the first player to get at least 20 points, 10 rebounds and 5 blocks in a game before his 20th birthday (blocks have been an official statistic since 1973). In his debut season he was a regular player with more than 28 minutes playing time per game and 60 appearances in the starting line-up ( starting five ).

As a team, the 2012/13 season was not very successful, the Hornets clearly missed the play-offs as the penultimate team in the Western Conference . Davis was first invited to the NBA All-Star Game in 2014 to replace the injured Kobe Bryant . On March 16, 2014 Davis scored 40 points and 21 rebounds in the Pelicans victory over the Boston Celtics . Both values were career bests. At 21 years and 5 days, Davis was the youngest player since Shaquille O'Neal (1993) and the fourth-youngest in NBA history to play a 40/20 game. At the end of the season, Davis led the NBA in saved throws with 2.8 per game. In the choice of the most improved player of the season, he ended up in third place.

In 2015, Davis was named to the starting grid of the NBA All-Star Games for the first time . It was his second nomination overall. However, Davis was unable to participate in the game due to an injury. With the Pelicans he reached the playoffs for the first time in his career in 2015, where they were eliminated without a win against the Golden State Warriors . Davis averaged 31.5 points and 11.0 rebounds in four games. For his season performance, he was appointed to both the All-NBA First Team and the NBA All-Defensive Second Team . In addition, he led the league for the second time in a row in blocks per encounter. In the summer of 2015, he prematurely extended his contract for another five years for 145 million US dollars. Until the summer of 2016, the contract was the highest-value contract in NBA history.

In 2016 Davis was called up again in the All-Star Game , this time only as a reservist. In the game against the Detroit Pistons on February 21, 2016, he reached 59 points and 20 rebounds. So he reached a new Pelicans point record and was thus only the third player since 1983 (next to Chris Webber and Shaquille O'Neal ), who managed a 50-point-20 rebounds game.

In the Pelicans' first game in the 2016/17 season , Davis scored 50 points, 16 rebounds, 5 assists, 7 steals and 4 blocks. Still, his team lost to the Denver Nuggets . Despite the well-known signing of DeMarcus Cousins during the season and Davis' career highs in points and rebounds, the Pelicans again missed the playoffs. In the main round of the 2018/19 game year, Davis was only able to fail for the second time in his NBA career to increase his point yield compared to the previous season. He came to an average of 25.9 points per encounter, in 2017/18 it was 28.1. Due to injuries, however, he only played 56 games in the 2018/19 season, as few as never before in a main round since his move to the NBA.

Los Angeles Lakers

In the summer of 2019, Davis moved to the Los Angeles Lakers in a transfer for three Lakers players and draft picks . The change came about as part of an exchange deal in which the Washington Wizards were involved in addition to the Lakers and New Orleans . The latter team received, among others, the two Germans Moritz Wagner and Isaac Bonga, who previously played in Los Angeles . At the Lakers, Davis became a teammate of LeBron James .

National team

Because of his outstanding performance Davis was appointed as the only college player in the extended national squad of the US selection for the London Olympics . Initially not considered for the final selection, he was re-nominated due to an injury to Blake Griffin during preparation for the games. At the 2012 Olympic Games in London , Davis won the gold medal with the US selection. In September 2014 Davis won the basketball world championship with the USA in Spain.

Personal

Davis' trademark is his fused eyebrows . Because of this feature the slogans "Fear the Brow" emerged ( Fear The Brow ) and "Raise the Brow" ( lifting the brow ). In 2012 he had both sayings protected by copyright.
