John Vincent Calipari (born February 10, 1959 in Moon Township , Pennsylvania ) is an American basketball coach who currently coaches the basketball team of the University of Kentucky . Calipari is currently one of the most successful and best-paid coaches in college basketball .

Career

Calipari initially played basketball at the University of North Carolina at Wilmington and Clarion University of Pennsylvania . After graduating from college, he became an assistant coach at the University of Kansas in 1982 . There he assisted Larry Brown, among others . From 1985 to 1988 he worked as an assistant coach at the University of Pittsburgh , before he got his first coaching position at the University of Massachusetts in 1988 . At "UMass" he trained his first NBA talent, Marcus Camby . With this he reached the Final Four of the NCAA in 1996 .

Between 1996 and 1999 he was a coach in the National Basketball Association (NBA) for the New Jersey Nets . However, he failed to live up to expectations and was sacked after a disastrous 3-17 start to the 1998-99 season. Shortly thereafter, Calipari took over a position as assistant coach with the Philadelphia 76ers , who were again supervised by Larry Brown.

In 2000, Calipari took over the University of Memphis and built a successful basketball program there, recruiting highly talented high school basketball players from across the country. Sun played among other Dajuan Wagner , Derrick Rose and Tyreke Evans for "Memphis Tigers". In 2008 they reached the final, but lost to the University of Kansas.

In 2009 Calipari took over the University of Kentucky and built a similarly successful program as in Memphis. Despite renewed promising talents like John Wall , DeMarcus Cousins and Eric Bledsoe, the Wildcats were eliminated in the first round of the NCAA Division I Basketball Championship tournament in 2010 . A year later you could not reach the final with Brandon Knight and Terrence Jones either. In 2012, Calipari won his first title with Kentucky. The Wildcats roster included NBA talents Anthony Davis and Michael Kidd-Gilchrist .

Calipari is known for recruiting highly decorated high school talent from across the country who earn high draft rankings in the annual NBA draft . His former players John Wall , Anthony Davis , Derrick Rose and Karl-Anthony Towns were each selected first in their draft classes.

Between 2011 and 2012, Calipari coached the Dominican Republic's national basketball team . With this he won the Centrobasket in 2012 . In 2015 he was inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame .
