DeMarcus Amir Cousins (born August 13, 1990 in Mobile , Alabama ) is an American basketball player who is 2.11 meters tall in the center position. Cousins is currently a free agent ; his last club in 2019/20 were the Los Angeles Lakers in the NBA .
Cousins was an NBA All-Star four times in his career and was world champion with Team USA in 2014 , as well as Olympic champion at the 2016 Summer Games .
Career
college
Cousins attended LeFlore High School in Mobile , Alabama . After graduating from high school, he initially accepted the University of Alabama at Birmingham , but then opted for the University of Memphis . After Memphis coach John Calipari moved to the University of Kentucky , Cousins also decided to move to Kentucky. Alongside John Wall , Cousins and the Wildcats made it to the Elite Eight of the NCAA Division I Basketball Championship tournament. In his freshman year, Cousins scored 15.1 points, 9.8 rebounds and 1.8 blocks. He decided after a year for a professional career and signed up for the NBA draft .
NBA
Sacramento Kings (2010-2017)
In the 2010 NBA draft , he was selected in fifth place by the Sacramento Kings . Cousins and Guard Tyreke Evans were already on the starting line-up for the Kings in his rookie season . For his good performance he was elected to the NBA All-Rookie First Team .
At the beginning of 2012, Cousins fell out with head coach Paul Westphal and demanded that the Kings leave. The change was not allowed, but Westphal dismissed shortly afterwards. In February 2012, Cousins was appointed to the BBVA Rising Stars Challenge .
In September 2013, Cousins signed a four-year contract with the Kings that should bring him a total salary of $ 62 million. Although Cousins recorded career highs in many categories, the Kings failed in the play-offs . On January 30, 2015, it was announced that Cousins will replace the injured Kobe Bryant in the NBA All-Star Game . This made him the first Kings player since Peja Stojaković and Brad Miller in 2004 to take part in the All-Star Game.
In early April 2015, Cousins scored triple doubles in two consecutive games, each with at least 20 points, 20 rebounds and 10 assists . He became only the third player in NBA history to do so (alongside Wilt Chamberlain and Elgin Baylor ). On January 23, 2016, Cousins set a new career record with 48 points in the Kings 108-97 victory over the Indiana Pacers . Two days later he surpassed his personal best and scored 56 points in the 129: 128 defeat against the Charlotte Hornets . He also broke Chris Webber's internal team maximum . Webber held the record by then with 51 points. Cousins did not reach the play-offs again with the Kings at the end of the season.
New Orleans Pelicans (2017-2018)
Cousins was transferred to the New Orleans Pelicans on February 20, 2017 together with Omri Casspi in exchange for Buddy Hield , Tyreke Evans , Langston Galloway and selection rights in the draft . Shortly after his move, he set Tyson Chandler's team rebound record by collecting 23 rebounding balls against the San Antonio Spurs . A few days later he scored 41 points and 17 rebounds in the win against the Memphis Grizzlies . The playoffs were missed despite the well-known duo Cousins and Davis .
On January 26, 2018 to Cousins moved in the game against the Houston Rockets a tear of the Achilles tendon to and fell for the rest of the season out.
Golden State Warriors (2018-2019)
On July 6, 2018, Cousins signed a one-year contract with the Golden State Warriors . There he made 30 main round appearances in the 2018/19 game year (16.3 points, 8.2 rebounds, 3.6 basket assists / game). In the following playoffs, his values fell: In eight encounters, Cousins came to 7.6 points and 4.9 rebounds per use before he was canceled due to a thigh injury.
Los Angeles Lakers (2019-2020)
In July 2019, Cousins moved to the Los Angeles Lakers . In the pre-season he tore a cruciate ligament. On February 23, 2020, the Lakers separated from their injured cousins in order to sign Markieff Morris . Cousins thus became a free agent without having played a game for the Lakers, which would allow him to sign for a significantly higher salary with the Lakers after his expected recovery in the season break.
National team
Cousins won the gold medal with the US national team at the 2014 World Basketball Championship in Spain. At the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro in 2016 he won the gold medal with the US selection.
