Michael Anthony Edward Kidd-Gilchrist (* 26. September 1993 as Michael Gilchrist in Philadelphia , Pennsylvania ) is an American NBA - Basketball player , who is currently the Dallas Mavericks played in the NBA.
Career
High school
When he played for St. Patrick High School in New Jersey , he was one of the best basketball players of his age in the country. In July 2010 he won the World Cup in Hamburg with the U-17 national team.
college
On April 14, 2011, he announced that he would play for the University of Kentucky in the 2011/12 season . In his first game in college, he made 15 points against the Marist Red Foxes. He achieved his first double-double in the game against arch rivals, the North Carolina Tar Heels, with 17 points and 11 rebounds. In the 2011/12 season he won the NCAA Division I Basketball Championship tournament together with Anthony Davis and Marquis Teague .
NBA
In April 2012, he signed up for the 2012 NBA draft . On June 28, he was drafted second by the Charlotte Hornets , then called Bobcats. Less than two months after his 19th birthday, he scored his first double-double in the NBA when he beat the Dallas Mavericks on November 10, 2012 with 25 points and 12 rebounds. Only one player managed that before. At only 18 years old, this was LeBron James . In his second NBA game on October 30, 2012 (in Phoenix) he scored 21 points, 12 rebounds. Also on November 29 against Memphis (33 points, 16 rebounds) and on December 20 in Chicago (32 points and 10 rebounds) he was still under 20. At the end of the season he was called to the NBA All-Rookie Second Team .
In 2014 he reached the playoffs for the first time with the Hornets, where they were eliminated in the first round against the Miami Heat . The season 2014/15 was Kidd-Gilchrist personally best year, which he finished with 10.9 points, 7.6 rebounds and 1.4 assists. He extended his contract for another four years for $ 52 million in the summer of 2015.
During a test match for the 2015/16 season against the Orlando Magic , Kidd-Gilchrist seriously injured his right shoulder, which means that he is expected to be out the entire season. However, he returned to the field in January 2016, but injured his shoulder again after playing 7 games this season and announced his season out a short time later.
The following three seasons, Kidd-Gilchrist increasingly stagnated with his achievements. In the 2018/19 season he lost his regular place on the Hornets starting line-up. He was only used an average of 19 minutes per game and scored 6.7 points and 3.8 rebounds per game this season.
Kidd-Gilchrist was fired from the Hornets in February 2020 after failing to justify his high draft position. He signed with the Dallas Mavericks shortly afterwards .

Kidd-Gilchrist's father, Michael Gilchrist Sr., a retired college basketball player , was shot dead on August 11, 1996. On July 7, 2011, Michael announced that he had officially changed his name to Kidd-Gilchrist in memory of his late uncle Darrin Kidd. Former NBA player Dajuan Wagner is Kidd-Gilchrist's cousin.
