José Juan Barea Mora (born June 26, 1984 in Mayagüez ), often just called JJ Barea , is a Puerto Rican basketball player who plays for the Dallas Mavericks in the NBA .

Personal

JJ Barea is the son of Jaime Barea and Marta Mora. Born in Mayagüez, Puerto Rico, he moved to Miami , Florida at the age of seventeen , where he completed his senior year at Miami Christian High School and was elected to Florida's All-State Team and became Miami-Dade's Player of the year.

Career

college

Barea spent his college years from 2003 to 2006 at Northeastern University in Boston , Massachusetts . In 2005 and 2006 he reached the finals for the Bob Cousy Award, which is given to the best point guard in the country. He was also nominated twice for the All-America East First Team. After Northeastern University moved to the Colonial Athletic Association , he was named to the All-CAA First Team. Barea quit college as the second best point collector, second best assist, and second best three point shooter in Northeastern University history.

Baloncesto Superior Nacional

Before Barea attended Northeastern University, he tried his hand at the Baloncesto Superior Nacional (BSN) at the age of 17 , where he played for the Indios de Mayagüez and played a total of 27 games in 2001 and 2002. In 2006 he played another nine games for the Cangrejeros de Santurce.

NBA

In 2006, Barea set up for the NBA draft , but remained undrafted and therefore played in the NBA's off-season tournaments to offer for a free agent contract. He played for the Golden State Warriors in the NBA Summer League and for the Dallas Mavericks in Rocky Mountain Revue. On October 30, 2006, Barea signed a contract with the Dallas Mavericks for the 2006/07 season and made his debut on November 4, 2006.

In January 2007 Barea played some time for the Fort Worth Flyers in the NBA Development League , where he scored more than 40 points in two games. Barea is the first player on loan from the NBA to become Performer of the Week in the NBA Development League. In the summer of 2007 he again took part in the NBA Summer League for the Mavericks and was elected to the NBA Summer League All-Star First Team. Because of this performance received a contract in Dallas for the following season and represented the injured Devin Harris for some games as a starter.

In the 2008/09 season Barea got a bigger and bigger role in the team. He got more minutes on the field thanks to his good performance. When Jerry Stackhouse , Josh Howard and Jason Terry had to sit out due to injury, he was used more and more by coach Rick Carlisle . Since he was able to continue convincing during this time, he was then brought onto the field in a rotation with Jason Kidd and Jason Terry. In the playoffs he even moved into the starting grid during the first round against the San Antonio Spurs to defend their superstar Tony Parker . In the following season he played 78 out of 82 possible games.

In the 2010/11 season Barea set new career highs: On December 9, 2010, he recorded 13 assists in a game against the New Jersey Nets and on January 1, 2011 29 points against the Milwaukee Bucks .

In 2010/11 the Mavericks were able to advance to the final of the NBA, where they defeated the Miami Heat 4-2. In the last two games of this series Barea was able to move up into the starting lineup. It was the first NBA championship of his career.

On December 12, 2011, Barea signed a $ 19 million four-year contract with the Minnesota Timberwolves . With the Timberwolves he scored his first triple double on March 24, 2012 in a game against the Oklahoma City Thunder .

Shortly before the start of the 2014/15 season , Barea was released from the Timberwolves. On October 29, 2014, he re-signed with the Mavericks and returned to Dallas after three years.

In the 2017/18 season Barea received the J. Walter Kennedy Citizenship Award for its social commitment .

National team

After he had already played in various youth national teams, Barea made his debut in the national team of Puerto Rico in July 2006 on the occasion of the Central America and Caribbean Games in Colombia , with which he won the gold medal there and where he was named Most Valuable Player . In 2007 he reached second place with the national team at the Pan American Games . At the qualifying tournament for the Olympic Games , which took place in July 2008, Barea was only a substitute behind Carlos Arroyo ; Puerto Rico missed qualifying for the Olympic tournament.

At the Central American Championship in 2008 , Barea was initially only a substitute before he came into the starting five for the last two games. Puerto Rico won the tournament and Barea was named Most Valuable Player of the tournament.

At the basketball world championship in 2014 he was eliminated with Puerto Rico in the preliminary round, but was still top scorer of the tournament with an average of 22 points per game.
