The Baloncesto Superior Nacional ( BSN ) is a professional basketball league based in Puerto Rico . She currently has ten active teams and seven inactive teams. The first championships were held in 1930 under the organization of the "Asociación Puertorriqueña de Baloncesto". The season usually starts in March and ends in summer. The league is thus a "summer league", which is also used by other professionals, often of Puerto Rican descent, provided that they are eliminated in European or North American leagues after the regular season or early in their play-offs in order to be in their to present play-free time. The league is thus similar to the Liga de Béisbol Profesional de Puerto Rico , which plays its games in the off-season of the US baseball profiles. The club organizations often use the same names or nicknames for their teams in baseball as in basketball at the respective location.

In the regular season, either 30 or 32 games are played by each club. After this regular season, the so-called "round robin" will be continued , in which the best six teams of the regular season were admitted in 2011, whereby the last two places in the second group phase were played between four teams. This second phase is followed by the final series of the two best teams, which is carried out in a "best-of-seven" series.

The current record champions are the Vaqueros de Bayamón with fourteen titles. It is followed by the Atléticos de San Germán with thirteen and the Leones de Ponce with twelve championships.

history

The BSN was an economically struggling league until the 1980s, but with Genaro 'Tuto' Marchand as president, it brought about extreme basketball popularity. So basketball overtook baseball, the second most popular sport at the time, and only lagged behind the then most popular sport boxing. After Hetin Reyes took over management, economic problems arose again, but these were generally attributed to the rising cost of living. Nevertheless, the game was continued with 13 teams.

In 2005 the financial problems came to a head again, so that the number of participating teams was reduced to nine. However, two teams returned for the 2007 season, the Indios de Mayagüez and the Gigantes de Carolina.

2008-present

Before the start of the season, Henry Neumann resigned the post of league president and entered politics, whereupon Felix "Felo" Rivera, the owner of the Criollos de Caguas at the time, succeeded him. Right at the beginning of his term of office, two new regulations were introduced to ensure the stability of gaming operations. First, a salary cap of $ 500,000 was introduced. If this upper salary limit is violated, the teams that have adhered to the regulation are supported with the fines. On the other hand, the restriction of players without Puerto Rican citizenship per team has been abolished.

Teams

In the past, the individual teams did not take part continuously in the game, but are often reactivated. With almost full participation of the teams, the league was already divided into divisions, differentiated according to teams from the greater San Juan area and the rest of the island in particular to the west. The names listed are in Spanish, as is the representation of the league and the clubs in various media. Another official language of Puerto Rico is English, so that the English-language names of the teams are often also common in the Puerto Rican metropolitan area of the United States ; the German translation is given in brackets for further explanation. The full name of a team is in Spanish '<Name> de <Ort>' or in English '<Ort> <Name>' (e.g. 'Vaqueros de Bayamón' or 'Bayamón Cowboys'). Teams in italics not in bold have not entered for the 2012 season.
