Richard Preston Carlisle (born October 27, 1959 in Ogdensburg , New York ) is an American basketball coach and former player. Since 2008 he has been under contract as head coach of the Dallas Mavericks in the North American professional league NBA . With the Mavericks, among other things, he won the NBA championship in 2011 .

Player career

Carlisle attended Worcester Academy for a year and then played college basketball at the University of Maine between 1979 and 1981 before moving to the University of Virginia in 1982 . As co-captain, he led the Virginia Cavaliers team to the Final Four of the NCAA Championship in 1984 .

In the subsequent NBA Draft in 1984 , Carlisle was selected in the third round in 70th place by the Boston Celtics . In the Celtics, he played alongside NBA legends such as Larry Bird , Kevin McHale and Robert Parish and won the NBA championship in the 1985/86 season . In the summer of 1987, Carlisle signed a contract with the New York Knicks . After a protracted shoulder injury, he completed five games for the New Jersey Nets in November 1989 before ending his playing career.

Coaching career

In 1989 he drew a coaching option, and coached the New Jersey Nets for five years under Bill Fitch and Chuck Daly . He then went to the Portland Trail Blazers for three seasons , where he was an assistant coach under PJ Carlesimo .

In 1997, Carlisle went to the Indiana Pacers , where he worked as an assistant coach under his former teammate Larry Bird . While coaching the Indiana Pacers, he helped them have their three best seasons ever. First they made it to the Eastern Conference Finals in 1997/98 and 1998/99 (where they lost to the Chicago Bulls and the New York Knicks ).

In the 1999/00 season, the Pacers reached the NBA Finals for the first time and lost to the Los Angeles Lakers . Larry Bird quit his job and suggested Carlisle as his successor, but Pacer President Donnie Walsh gave Isiah Thomas the place as head coach instead.

Detroit Pistons

In 2001, Carlisle signed a contract with the Detroit Pistons and began his career as a head coach. In two seasons he led the Pistons to a 61% win rate and was named Coach of the Year in 2002. In 2002/03 the Pistons fired him a year before his contract expired and instead gave Larry Brown a contract. A dispute between Carlisle and the team owner led to Carlisle's early release.

Indiana Pacers

In the 2003/04 season, Carlisle got an offer from the Indiana Pacers and became the new head coach. In his first year he led the Pacers to their best season with 61 wins, 21 losses and a win rate of 74.4%. In the first two rounds of the playoffs, they beat the Boston Celtics and Miami Heat until they were eventually defeated by the Detroit Pistons .

After the Pacers missed the playoffs for the first time since 1997 with a negative record (35 wins, 47 defeats) in the 2006/07 season, Carlisle's career as a Pacers coach ended. It is unclear whether he was fired or left himself. On June 12, 2007, he gave up his position as Vice President of the Pacers.

He then got a job as a studio analyst at ESPN .

Dallas Mavericks

Carlisle signed on May 9, 2008 with the Dallas Mavericks previously coached by Avery Johnson , a four-year contract. After the first two years in the playoffs were unsuccessful, he led the Mavericks to their first NBA championship in 2011. Shortly after the 2011/12 season, he signed a new contract with the Mavs. With the success of the Mavericks on February 1, 2020 against the Atlanta Hawks (123: 100), Carlisle celebrated his 500th victory as a coach in the NBA.
