Dwane Casey (born April 17, 1957 in Indianapolis , Indiana ) is an American basketball coach who is currently under contract with the Detroit Pistons in the NBA .

Career as a coach

After studying at the University of Kentucky , Casey worked for a few years as an assistant coach at that university and at Western Kentucky University. He then took over post as head coach in the Japanese basketball league.

In 1994 he finally got his first job in the NBA as an assistant coach with the Seattle SuperSonics . With Seattle, Casey achieved the best record four times in the respective division. In addition, the team reached the final series in the 1995/96 season , which was lost in six games against the Chicago Bulls led by Michael Jordan . As the successor to Kevin McHale , Casey took over the 2005/06 season with the Minnesota Timberwolves for the first time as head coach of an NBA team. He lost this post during the 2006/07 season . For the 2008/09 season , Casey hired as an assistant coach under Rick Carlisle at the Dallas Mavericks . The Mavs first won a division title in the 2009/10 season . In the 2010/11 season , Casey won the NBA title with the Mavs in six games against the heavily favored Miami Heat around LeBron James .

Casey then signed a contract as head coach with the Toronto Raptors . After two initially unsuccessful seasons in Toronto, the Raptors made it into the playoffs for the first time in six years in the 2013/14 season . Toronto set a club record for most wins in a season and also won the Atlantic Division. With 49 wins, this record was again improved by one victory in the 2014/15 season . In both seasons, however, the Raptors failed in the first round of the playoffs. After the first season in Raptors history with more than 50 wins (56 wins, 26 defeats), the 2015/16 season made it into the finals of the Eastern Conference for the first time . Here the Raptors lost to the Cleveland Cavaliers in six games . In the 2016/17 and 2017/18 seasons , the Raptors again won over 50 games each. In the playoffs, the semifinals of the Eastern Conference were reached. In both seasons, however, the Raptors lost again to the Cleveland Cavaliers, with Toronto unable to win. In 2018 Casey was sacked by the Raptors, despite another record season with 59 wins. Casey was named NBA Coach of the Year after his release . The general manager of the Toronto Raptors, Masai Ujiri , fired a coach for the second time after a season for which he was named the best coach (after George Karl with the Denver Nuggets ). With 320 victories in the seven seasons under Casey as head coach, the Toronto Raptors are now the coach with the most wins in the team's history.

Casey became the new head coach of the Detroit Pistons for the 2018/19 season .
